Bloxels is a hands-on platform that lets students design and build their own video games using physical blocks and a digital app.
By creating characters, settings, and game mechanics with color-coded blocks, students learn storytelling, logic, and game design while building critical thinking and creativity—all in a fun, engaging way that blends physical and digital learning.
*Note: Bloxels now has a premium fee. The tech consortium no longer supports the use of the app due to both the fee and the explicit parental consent requirement.
Could be used instead for patterns, stop motion, etc.

Tips
Explain what each color block does – Use the color key to teach terrain, hazards, power-ups, etc.
Start with character or scene design – Let students build small elements before creating full games.
Encourage story planning – Have students sketch a game map or storyboard before building.
Tie into ELA – Create games based on books or student-written stories.
