Derek graduated as a civil engineer from the Universidad de Costa Rica, with emphasis in structural, environmental and soil engineering. He worked for more than 4 years as a licensed civil engineer in Costa Rica on project management and structural design, analysis and inspection, as well as seismic retrofit, of a big variety of projects across Latin America, including residential/commercial buildings, industrial facilities, airport and maritime port complexes and environmental structures. He graduated from the MEEES Program with a master’s degree on Earthquake Engineering. Since then, he has been involved in the development of analysis software for structures under extreme loading conditions, and more recently he has started to work in the field of non‐structural components. Nowadays he is a researcher and PhD candidate at the IUSS program of Understanding and Managing Extremes (UME), were his current research aims to develop a standardized methodology for the quantification of seismic performance factors for non‐structural elements.
