In the Summer 2025 semester, I spent two weeks in Wroclaw, Poland as a study abroad experience. I had an incredible time being in a new country, getting to know people from both Wroclaw and my own group, and apply my experiences to our guiding theory, Coordinated Management of Meaning (CMM).
As I complete the following required assignments for the program, they will be uploaded here along with photos of my experiences! This trip was incredible, and I have so much to share.
To the left is photos I captured on my digital camera while walking around Wroclaw.
After my time in Poland, I completed this paper based off of my observations and secondary research. By examining intercultural communication differences between Poland and the United States, this paper argues that more effective, culturally tailored health communication strategies are essential to mitigating antibiotic misuse and improving public understanding in both countries.
Poland and the United States differ in their structures, resources, and public health environments but share a mutual responsibility to improve communication, improve provider-patient relationships, and bring about sustainable public education.
This paper includes a semi-successful survey and secondary resrach using IU databases. I used keywords such as ‘antibiotic resistance AND Poland OR United States’, ‘antibiotic resistance AND “empowered patients” OR “direct to consumer advertising”’, and ‘antibiotic resistance AND “public health” AND livestock’ to guide my research.
While I obviously had an awesome time in Wroclaw, there was a lot of learning that happened there too! Before leaving, we were expected to get oriented with our textbook and our guiding theory.
Coordinated Management of Meaning, or CMM, is a theory that provides a framework for how individuals and cultures create, coordinate, and manage their meanings within society and their realities. The theory feels very abstract, but can be applied to many different contexts.
Using Coordinated Management of Meaning, I drew comparisons and synthesised my experiences abroad in Wroclaw with our guiding theory, Coordinated Management of Meaning from the book Communication and the Human Condition By W. Barnett Pearce.
This paper will analyze and connect my experiences and observations from my time in Poland with key concepts and ideas from Pearce’s Coordinated Management of Meaning theory, stemming from his book Communication and the Human Condition.
The most constant coursework during my time in Poland was the daily journals I completed, documenting my experiences. This served two purposes:
Helping me remember my experiences for personal enjoyment
Guiding my journal/text synthesis paper
My handwriting can be a bit tough, but these journals are included as a long PDF to the right of this text box! Feel free to read, if you would like an inside scoop.
