Camp Brosius

Camp Brosius is a 3 credit hour leadership camp offered through the school of Health and Human Sciences. It is a week long immersive experience that takes place at Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. The primary purpose of this camp is to develop effective, competent, and responsible leaders who are able to successfully influence others while accomplishing a goal. By focusing on building up our strengths and acknowledging our weaknesses, Camp Brosius has helped me feel more confident in a leadership position.

My Camp Experience

Coming into camp, I was not looking forward to loosing a week of my summer to attend a school sanctioned event. However, shortly after arrival, my opinions changed. I quickly realized that I would get the most out of camp if I invested my full attention towards it. We were broken up into "families" of 8-9 people and this is the group we spend most of our time with. Throughout the week, I was tasked with being the leader of my family for the completion of two challenges. These challenges took between 20-35 minutes and tested my strategic thinking, leaderships skills, and collaboration skills.

Throughout the week I learned a lot about my personal leadership style. I am a lead by example type of person and work best when I am personally involved with completing the task with my team. Based on my peer evaluations, my teammates said that I have a calming presence, and demonstrate good listening and communication skills.

Based on my Gallup Clifton Strengths Assessment results, my top leadership skills are Achiever, Restorative, Learner, Intellection, and Focus. By knowing and utilizing these strengths, I was able to successfully lead my team through both of the tasks that I led. It is important to know what you are good at so that you can use the strengths to your advantage. It is also important to know areas that you can improve in so that you are always bettering yourself.
