Standarization of NaOH
This assignment is a formal lab report. During this course we learned about acids and bases. This specific lab required titrating an unknown concentration of acid with a known concentration of base.
The procedure of titrating required steady hands and patience. I quickly learned this after I over-titrated the acid multiple times. To correctly titrate the acid, one must reach the endpoint, which in this lab, an indicator was used to determine.
A formal report is written to collect all the data in one place and analyze it. It is important to find potential errors in an experiment and understand how those could have skewed the data.
Cation Analysis
This assignment was the second lab report of the semester. A series of cations underwent four different tests. The first test studied color change. The second and third tests studied precipitate reactions. The fourth test was a flame test. This lab took place over two class sessions. The first day was spent testing all the cations with various spot-test, precipitating, and precipitate-dissolving reagents. This allowed us to reserve a series of reactions and learn how different cations behave. It also allowed us to practice repeating tests to ensure no contamination occurred. The second day was spent testing an unknown containing two or three cations. Our job was to determine which ones the unknown contained. This lab required a lot of problem-solving and organizational skills.
