Darin is in his final term of the Civil Engineering program at the University of Manitoba. Having been Vice President last year, Darin is excited to continue to contribute to the student chapter in new and exciting ways. He has a keen interest in transit planning and infrastructure, and strives to create a positive impact within the community.
Darin has spent the last 3 years with Stantec Consulting, gaining valuable experience in the civil engineering field, specifically within the Greater Vancouver Area. He hopes to continue making an impact within the Vancouver community, and bring innovative ideas back to Winnipeg and also make a bigger impact here.
In his free time, you can find Darin on a flight to his next travel destination, eager to see what the rest of the world’s transportation engineering infrastructures are really like! Darin also enjoys photography, capturing the beauty of nature, and sharing it with the rest of the world.
Luke is in his 4th year of the Civil Engineering program at the University of Manitoba and is excited to join the UMITE executive this year. While he might be new to the position, he has a deep passion and interest for all things transportation, and is looking forward to contributing that energy to the student chapter.
Over the last few years Luke has had the opportunity to expand his skills in many different positions. From working for Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure as a Water Infrastructure Data Technician helping to map the province's field drains, or even just as a simple farm hand. Through this work as well as his contributions to several engineering student competition teams, Luke has gained a deep appreciation and understanding of the work required for successful projects, something he looks forward to building on in the future.
Luke’s passion for transportation isn’t just contained to his studies as he loves to learn about cities and the way we get around them in his free time, spending many hours combing through google maps. He enjoys hanging out with friends, going to live music events, playing video games and when he can Swing Dancing.
After two years as an executive member of UMITE, Joshua is in his final year of Civil Engineering studies. Having served as President last year, Joshua is excited to be able to transfer generational knowledge to his fellow executive members, and to help enable them through the finances of the student chapter.
Joshua has worked on numerous infrastructure projects within Manitoba & British Columbia, working as a representative of the engineer to oversee construction of roads, sewer & water lines, as well as waste management facilities. With over two years of experience, Joshua enjoys discovering why something is the way that it has become, which is even more important within transportation engineering.
When Joshua isn’t working on a co-op term, you can find him trying to improve his hiking skills, trying to find a mountain that is not too big, but not too small, to climb. Joshua also helps write for a local university engineering publication, The Red Lion. Recently he managed to finish The Power Broker, something he wishes he could put on a resume.
Stephanie is in her fourth and final year in Mechanical Engineering at UofM! This is her first year being Secretary but her second year with UMITE. Stephanie is thrilled to assist and contribute to the student chapter by utilizing her strong organizational and teamwork skills. Being in the mechanical engineering program, she is eager to broaden her knowledge in this field and meet fellow transportation enthusiasts in the process.
During the summers between school terms, Stephanie has gained plenty of industry experience in various areas of her field. Having previously held positions at the City of Winnipeg and StandardAero, she has gained interests in sustainability, energy efficiency and process improvement. Upon the completion of her final year, Stephanie is excited to continue building her career!
When she is not busy studying or working, Stephanie enjoys discovering new restaurants, both locally and during her travels, as well as doing her own cooking and baking at home. While traveling, Stephanie enjoys seeing how places around the world operate. Whether that is through admiring architecture, finding innovative energy solutions or trying the local public transportation, Stephanie enjoys experiencing what life is like outside of Winnipeg!
Nasim obtained her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering. Her enthusiasm for applying to a Ph.D. program in Transportation Engineering is rooted in the type of research she carried out for her Master’s thesis and her experience of working in the industry, where she could apply machine learning and optimization methods for complex and interactive systems to solve real-world problems.
Nasim started her Ph.D. study at U of M in Winter 2022. Her current research centers around the estimation of origin-destination trips using deep learning approaches, specifically focusing on freight transportation. This research aims to contribute to the resilience and safety of the freight transportation network of the Canadian Prairie and Northern Region. Nasim has been the Technical Chair of the U of M ITE Student Chapter since September 2023.
Nasim enjoys biking and exploring Canada’s natural landscapes during the summer, and ice skating in the winter. She also loves relaxing by watching movies.
Janak completed his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Tribhuvan University, Nepal, in 2014. He spent over five years with IMC-Worldwide, a UK-based consulting firm, working on road design, construction, maintenance, and asset management projects supporting the local governments of Nepal.
Janak completed his Master’s degree at the University of Tokyo in 2022, where his research focused on “The Impacts of Weather Conditions on Motorway Network Performance.” Currently pursuing his Ph.D. at the University of Manitoba, Janak’s research explores traffic monitoring, missing traffic data imputation, network analysis, safety, and intelligent transport systems.
As Community Chair, he aims to strengthen connections between students, community and industry while promoting collaboration within the transportation engineering professionals. Janak’s hobbies include travelling, hiking and playing the flute.
Alexandre is in his fourth year of the Civil Engineering program at the University of Manitoba. Now in his second year with the student chapter and serving his first term as an executive, he is eager to contribute to its growth and continue building a strong community for students. His interests are in roadway design and traffic optimization, areas in which he hopes to make a meaningful impact in his career.
This past summer, Alexandre worked with Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure, where he gained hands-on experience in highway design and construction. He looks forward to applying this experience in the future.
Outside of his studies, Alexandre enjoys camping, exploring the outdoors, and eating croissants along with other pastries. He looks forward to contributing positively to the community and is excited for year ahead!
Dr. Giuseppe Grande is an instructor in the Department of Engineering Education at the University of Manitoba. He finished his Ph.D. in transportation engineering in 2021.
