NPHS Grading Practices

During the 2021-2022 academic year, the New Prague High School faculty spent a year exploring and reflecting on best practices around grading.  The faculty of New Prague High School believes that grading practices must promote the best and most aspirational regard for what our students are capable of regardless of environmental factors.

Our goals are to make our grading practices:

Below you will find the three main grading agreements in all courses this year.

*Concurrent Enrollment (college courses) and AP courses will not be subject to these adjustments as these courses are not New Prague High School courses but courses offered by partnering colleges and universities.

students are permitted to retake any formative assignment that is entered into the grade book prior to the summative assessment

Students may retake any formative assessment or assignment before the summative assessment for the unit.  Students must confer with their teacher for reteaching before the retake.  Retakes can occur during study halls or in the test center (Media Center) on Wednesday mornings.

Late work will be accepted for full credit until summative assessment

Late work, or formative work, will be accepted for full credit until the summative assessment is given for that unit.  Teachers may not accept late work beyond the date of the summative assessment.

Each final Grade in each course will be calculated with 20% based on formative Work and 80% summative work

Summative Assessment - An evaluation at the end of a unit of study. Its purpose is to determine a student's knowledge, performance, or proficiency based on what they know versus what they should have learned.  A summative assessment focuses on measuring outcomes based on predefined learning targets.  These might be an exam, a discussion, a speech, a report, an essay, a portfolio, or a project.

Formative Assessment - A learning activity or process that helps the student and teacher gauge student learning.  This is where students have an opportunity to practice new concepts, skills, or ideas. Examples of formative assessment may include but are not limited to quizzes, short papers, speeches, and reflections.

Students can practice and will receive teacher feedback on content, skills, and concepts before taking a summative assessment.

There are some courses (World Language for example) that have been using a 10/90 split for many years.   Due to the many components of learning a second language there are many opportunities for students to learn and be successful with this split.
