In Minnesota, the ACCESS test refers to the WIDA ACCESS for ELL = English Language Learners/Multilingual Learners (MLL) (and in some cases the WIDA Alternate ACCESS)—a standardized English language proficiency assessment required for multilingual students (also referred to as ELs/MLs) in public schools.
All identified English learners in grades K–12 (this includes students 18-22 participating in a transition program) enrolled in Minnesota public schools take the standard WIDA ACCESS for ELs/MLs each year.
Alternate ACCESS is available for students with significant cognitive disabilities who meet specific participation criteria.
Students With Disabilities
A disability does not exempt a student from ACCESS.
The IEP team determines:
Appropriate accommodations, and/or
Whether the student meets criteria for Alternate ACCESS (this is a participation decision, not an exemption).
IEP teams should review this document, for more information about the ACCESS.
