Parking: Buses will be parking in front of the building for drop off/pick up and students will be entering/leaving through the main Lincoln door. The parking spaces in front of the building and on the opposite side of 8th Street SHOULD NOT be used by parents during bus pick up/drop off times as it creates congestion for buses and safety concerns. Please also reinforce with your student that they should always cross at the crosswalk. It is very dangerous for students to cross in the middle of the block, even with an adult.

K-5 INFORMATION

Big Buddy/Little Buddy: K-3 students will be paired with an older student and will meet periodically throughout the year to complete projects, learn and grow together.

Breakfast: Breakfast will start at 9:15 in the morning. Breakfast is free for kindergarten students. Please talk to your child if you do not want them to get a breakfast.

Lunch: A hot lunch option is available for your family or you are welcome to send a nutritious cold lunch. A cold lunch student may purchase milk at school. It is your responsibility to deposit money into a PayPAMS account before school, so your child can make food purchases. If your child requires dietary accommodations, please work with Student Nutrition Services to help meet their needs.  

Snacks: Snacks are brought from home and should be healthy (no candy or high-sugar foods/drinks).  Please keep any classroom allergies in mind when sending food to school. Your teacher will provide your child’s snack schedule.

Lincoln Lynx: Your child will bring home a Lynx bag containing books, recording sheet, and stamp card. Please keep these materials in the bag when not being used. Students are expected to use Lynx materials on a daily basis, thirty minutes every night is expected. More information will be shared during Parent Orientation.

Study Island: Online learning program customized to specific state standards in math, reading, writing, science, and social studies with interactive features and games that engage students and reinforce and reward learning achievement. Login information will be provided so your child can work on his/her assignments at home.

IXL: A math app that is broken up by grade and topic. For example, the younger grades will practice addition and subtraction facts; whereas, the older grades may have complicated algebraic problems to complete.

Field Trips: Parents/guardians will sign a field trip release at the beginning of the school year (found in your folder at Meet the Teacher). Teachers will provide the schedule of field trips and will coordinate volunteers to chaperone.

Illnesses: If your child becomes ill at school and needs to go home, the Health Services Staff will contact a parent/guardian. If staff are unable to reach parents and determined that the student must go home, the emergency contacts will then be called.

iPad Policy: Students will sign an iPad policy at the beginning of the year. Grades K-5 are required to leave their iPad at school and will not be permitted to bring them home. The headphones on the school supply list are required for their iPads.

Step Into Learning: The first two full days of school are reserved for Step Into Learning.  During this time, you and your child will have a 1:1 appointment with your teacher to help assess where children are at socially, emotionally, and academically prior to the first day of full in-person school.  Parents will connect with the teacher regarding classroom activities, ways to be involved, and things to be looking for throughout the year.

Old Barn Field Trip: Located in Preston, MN – an annual field trip for fourth and fifth grade students in the spring. Chaperones are always needed, reach out to your child’s teacher for more information.

School Productions: Younger classes typically hold one school production a year, the teacher will provide you with the date. It is a fun opportunity for friends and family to come watch your child perform on our school stage.

Track & Field Day: held at Slatterly Park for grade K-3 in the spring. Dates will be provided by the teacher.

UPPERS INFORMATION (Grades 6 – 8)

The Uppers program is similar to traditional middle schools as the students have a homeroom teacher and switch classes for their assigned curriculum.

Camping Trip: Uppers are invited to participate in a camping trip. Students provide their own food/tents and activities are planned throughout the day. More information will be provided by staff.

Conferences: are held twice a year. Families do not sign up for a conference time as in the lower grades. All the teachers will be available in the gym during the evening of the conference, and students/parents line up to wait to speak with each teacher you wish to meet with that evening.

Elective: Aside from the core curriculum of Math, English, Science, etc., now the students have the opportunity to try band, choir, orchestra and other electives that change regularly. The electives are often driven by student interest.

Illnesses: If your child becomes ill at school and needs to go home, the Health Services Staff will contact a parent/guardian. Children must call from health office and not from their cell phones.

Chromebooks: Uppers are allowed the use of a Chromebook for the school year which may go home as well. Students are responsible for the care of their device as far as keeping it charged and ready for the school day. Any damage or loss may end up as the responsibility of the student/family to replace.

Lockers: are provided for each student. Locks are optional, but recommended.

Schedules: Each student receives a schedule at the beginning of the school year to follow.

Skyward: Assignments and grades are posted on Skyward under Gradebook to check whenever you choose.

LINCOLN  LINGO

Contains definitions for a number of terms or acronyms that are important to know, or are unique to Lincoln

Agendas: Daily/weekly/monthly planners required for select grades. Purchased directly from Lincoln K-8.

Amplify: The new science curriculum purchased as a special project for grades K-5. It is designed to meet the science and engineering standards that are addressed in InSciEd Out and Project Leader The Way.

Big Toy: Nickname for the large playground/playset next to the parking lot/blacktop.

District Professional Development Day: Days designated by Rochester Public Schools for district staff to participate in professional development. There is NO SCHOOL ON THESE DAYS.

End of Quarter Work Day: Days designated by Rochester Public Schools for district staff to complete report cards. There is NO SCHOOL ON THESE DAYS.

Family Fridays with All Pro Dad: Opportunity before school for special family members in a student’s life to get together for a chance to brag about their child and learn together.  Check out the event page for future dates!

Flexible Conference Day: Days designated by Rochester Public Schools for district staff to hold parent-teacher conferences. There is NO SCHOOL ON THESE DAYS.

First Lego League (FLL): FLL is an exciting and fun extracurricular global robotics program that ignites an enthusiasm for discovery, science, and technology in kids in K - 3rd (Junior Lego League) and 4th - 8th grade (First Lego League).

InSciEd Out: Integrate Science Education Outreach – The innovative science curriculum/program developed by Lincoln teachers in partnership with Mayo Clinic and Winona State University. Curriculum modules are being used at Lincoln in grades K-8.

Lincoln Sprouts: Project in 1st grade classrooms to grow plants then market and sell them.

Makerspace: Throughout the school year, students have access to this space to create, invent, and work on projects.

MCA: Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments – State mandated testing for students in grades 3–8.

MEA: Commonly used name for the two NO SCHOOL days in the middle of October, now called Education Minnesota Professional Conferences. Refers to the old name of the Minnesota teachers’ organization “Minnesota Education Association,” now called Education Minnesota.

Mr. S.: What most of the kids call Mr. Sonju, the principal.

NWEA – MAP: Northwest Evaluation Association – Measures of Academic Progress. Assessments for students used in grades K–8.

Peachjar: Delivers PDF flyers to your email inbox from the District and school.

PROPara: stands for ParaProfessionals – Lincoln staff that work with students one-on-one and in classrooms.

PPT: Program Planning Team – Lincoln’s name for our parent-teacher-student-staff organization.

Poofing: the way baskets for the Lincoln Auction are wrapped, decorated, and labeled.

Project Lead The Way (PLTW): Curriculum K-8 classrooms engage students and inspire interest in STEM subjects through hands-on learning and real-world problems solving.

RAP: Rochester After School Program - free for all students in grades 1-8 from 3:35 to 4:50 P.M.. There is homework help, extra enrichments, and learning activities all taught by Lincoln Staff. Late busing is also available. Begins in November and runs through April.

Rocktown Tour: Uppers students visit Rochester elementary schools in the Spring of each year to share encouraging messages and songs about rockin’ the MCA tests.

SignUpGenius: website used by many PPT committees to sign up for volunteer opportunities.

Skyward: Rochester Public Schools student database system, family information, and communication portal.

Special Projects: Auction profits that remain after funding the PPT budget are allocated to Special Projects. Parents, teachers, and students can submit proposals for Special Projects.

Study Island: Online program used by Lincoln students to practice classroom skills and knowledge and prepare for standardized testing.

Uppers: Nickname for students in grades 6-8.

ViE: Volunteers in Education – All school and district volunteers are organized through this program.

Zebrafish: Often used as a nickname for the InSciEd Out program. Zebrafish are actually just one component of the science curriculum, but are an important animal model for science study.
