Texts take center stage in the Pre-AP English 1 classroom, inspiring and preparing all students for close, critical reading and analytical writing. This course trains the reader to observe the small details in a text to arrive at a deeper understanding of the whole. It also trains the reader to appreciate authors’ sometimes-subtle choices, developing an awareness of how words produce effects and how the conventions of the English language are used for both precision and style. As writers, students focus first on crafting complex sentences, building this foundational skill; they then move on to producing well-organized paragraphs and, as the year progresses, more sophisticated, longer-form analyses.

I started teaching at Kennedy in 2004. I currently teach tenth grade Honors World Literature, Pre-AP English 1, and English 9. I have taught English 10, Film Studies, Teen Literature, Mythology, and African American Literature. I advise the Kennedy Guitar Club and love most music, and I also advise Kennedy Green Club because I'm passionate about environmentalism.
Before coming to Kennedy, I taught high school English for three years in Brooklyn, New York. From 1996-2001, I worked for the Brooklyn Public Library in the Adult Literacy Program.
I earned a Masters in Secondary English Education from Brooklyn College in 2003, a Masters in English Literature from New York University in 1995, and a B.A. in English from Rutgers University in 1990. I live in Saint Louis Park and insist that pop is called soda.
