First grade is a year where your child will learn and grow so much in reading, writing, math and independence! Listed below are areas of learning for first grade students:
Math: We will begin the year by looking at adding and subtracting numbers through 10. We will explore place value by the addition and subtraction of numbers through 20. We will then move into comparing and ordering length measurements as numbers. Next, we will focus on the place value and addition and subtraction of numbers through 40. Then we will look at identifying, composing, and partitioning shapes. We will end the year with place value, comparison, and addition and subtraction to 100.
Literacy: (Includes reading, writing, and word study): First grade is a year of tremendous growth as readers and writers! Students learn how words work, how to say words slowly to hear sounds in words when reading and writing, strategies that can help them grow as readers and writers, how a reader and writer looks and sounds like, many high frequency words to use when reading and writing and much more! You will be amazed at how much your child changes as a reader and writer this school year!
Science: In science, we study patterns in the sky, light and sound waves, as well as the structure and function of plants and animals. Science instruction is incorporated into literacy instruction during the day.
Social Studies: In social studies, we learn about family, family stories, economic choices, being a global citizen, maps and geography, and the president. Social studies instruction is incorporated into literacy instruction during the day.
