Every student will be given a take home folder on his/her first day. This is main way that I communicate with families what your child is doing/learning. Included in this folder will be a weekly newsletter, daily papers completed during the day, any communication from the office/district, as well as homework activities. These homework activities will help reinforce what your child's learning. There are 3 different activities students will have during throughout the week.
Students will have math homework almost every weekend in the daily homework folder. This will be a small packet (1-2 worksheets) to review skills taught in class during the week. A cover sheet will explain how to complete the task and provide background information for the skill. Homework is meant to be done as independently as possible. If your child is having difficulty completing the task, feel free to help where needed but please let me know so I can provide additional support at school when necessary. Completed homework is returned to school the very next school day unless otherwise stated on the cover sheet.
Students should also be reading every night. In late September, students will receive a take-home reading bag. Every day (unless I am absent), students will choose a "just right" book to read at home from our reading cart. Students will fill in the title of the book on the reading log and place the book and log into the take-home bag. These bags are brought home each day and read with an adult at home. Reading logs are initialed by an adult only, and placed with the book back into the take-home bag. These are returned to school every school day. This daily activity should take less than 10 minutes to complete.
In addition, all students participate in a daily take-home "belt program" to reinforce the 150+ high frequency words first graders are expected to know by the end of the school year. Learning these words will "free your child up" as he/she reads. Daily practice should take around 5 minutes. Please click the link below to learn more about our classroom Belt Progam:
