In social studies this year, we will be exploring the community that we live in and comparing it to communities around the world. We will discuss the differences between rural, suburban, and urban communities and the qualities of each. We will also learn how to read a map and find where we are located on a map. Throughout the year, we will work through five units of study.
Unit One: Individual Development and Cultural Identity- An exploration of rural, suburban, and urban communities. We will also look at holidays celebrated in different communities.
Unit Two: Civic Ideals and Practices- An exploration of what a democracy is, our role as citizens of a community, and the governments role to keep us safe. We will also look at American symbols that represent our country and the laws of our nation.
Unit Three: Geography, Humans, and the Environment- An exploration of natural and physical features and how the vary in different types of communities. We will also learn map skills and locate different communities around the globe.
Unit Four: Time, Continuity, and Change- We will explore how our community has changed over time and the events that caused these changes.
Unit Five: Economic Systems- We will explore the needs and wants of a community and how those needs are meant through community resources. We will also look at the value of money, the purpose of taxes, and different jobs within a community,
