Kindergarten is a year where your child will learn a all about how to be in school socially as well as the fundamentals of reading, writing and mathematics. Here are just a few of the things we will cover this year:
Math: We will begin the year by looking at numbers and couting 1-1 match to 10. We want the students to be able to count to 10 verbally as well as count objects up to 10. We will also focus on number recognition in many forms-numeric, quantity, and in 5/10 frames. We will then move on to identifiying 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional shapes. We want students to recognized shapes not only by how they look but to be able to tell why it is a triangle vs a cone based on its attributes. Next we will look at comparing length, weight and capacity of objects. As the year progresses, we will learn how to add and subtract numbers up to 10. By the end of the year students should be able to count to 100 by 1's and 10's, They will need to count/recognize numbers 1-20 and be able to compare and analyze 2D and 3D shapes.
Literacy (Includes reading, writing, and word study):
Reading: FIRST AND FOREMOST WE LEARN LETTER RECOGNITION-captial and lowercase letters/sounds. We will slowly begin to get your child to match the words they know and point to them in the story, we will then move to the basics of 1-1 matching whcih means your child can point and match the words that "pop" out of their mouth. Your child will me in a guided reading group 2-3 times a week with other students reading at their level, Over the year, we will work on developing sight word recognition, fluency and comprehension strategies students can use to help them understand what they are reading.
Writing: In writing, we will be learning to write personal narratives, opinion pieces, and informational text. We will be authors daily and will learn to draw a picture to tell a story which will lead to students writing a full story with words and pictures to match. We will also explore author's craft and things we can try out in out writing and work on how to use proper mechanics (capitalization, periods, and spelling) in our writing as appropriate for kindergarteners.
Word Study: In word study, students will work on independently spelling the kindergarten no-excuse words. We will also be using the Words Their Way program to sort words according to spelling patterns. We focus a lot on letter/sound recognition as well as beginning and ending blends. Word study groups will be formed at the beginning of the year based on the spelling skills your child has.
Science: In science, we study life cycles, seasons and weather and the 5 senses just to name a few. We incorporate science throughout our literacy instruction.
Social Studies: In social studies, we learn about our local community and how to be a good citizen. Social studies instruction is incorporated into literacy instruction during the day.
