What's New in the LMC

January 2020

Read Around the World!

Put on your exploring hat and adventure boots, our school-wide annual reading program sponsored by the Kane County Cougars and Six Flags Great America is about to begin.

Each individual explorer (student) goal is 360 minutes or six hours of reading between January 10th and February 7th. All students who reach this goal will receive a ticket for Six Flags Great America Amusement park to be used in the summer and a ticket voucher for a Kane County Cougars’ baseball game on May 9th at 1:00 pm or May 25th at 1:00 pm (includes a drawstring bag, hot dog and soft drink).

On the last day of each week, students will turn in his/her reading log. New this year… each class will have a class goal for minutes of reading. Each week, when the reading log sheets are turned in, their class hot air balloon will move across the White Eagle world map in the LMC. The faster each team reads, the faster their class hot air balloon will move through the world. Each class that achieves its goal will have an ice cream sandwich party at the end of the program. So, visit a library near you, grab a book, and get ready to Read Around the World!

Battle of the Bluestems

Do you want to have some fun? Reading?? Prizes?? Get a team together and battle it out for the champion of Bluestem! If you would like to participate, get a team together and pick a name. Your team can consist of 2, 3, or 4 players. Your teammates can be any 3rd - 5th grader at White Eagle.

A good idea when choosing your teammates: They should be people you can work well with in a team atmosphere. Teammates are required to have read at least 5 of the books for your team. At least one of your teammates should have read any books that you or the other teammate have not, so your team will be able to answer questions about ALL the books. Remember the more books your team reads, the better prepared your will be!

Here is how the battle will work: You and your teammates will answer questions about the books on the list. The top 2 teams that accumulate the most points with correct answers during the White Eagle school battle will advance to the Crosstown Battle at Builta Elementary on March 12, 2020. Right now we have 15 other schools that will participate in the Crosstown Battle.

Important Dates:

· Team Slips turned in no later than Monday, February 3, 2020.

· White Eagle Bluestem Battle on March 9, 2020 from 3:45-4:30 p.m.

· Crosstown Battle (other District 204 elementary schools) March 12, 2020 at Builta Elementary School 4:45-6:00 pm.

Please return the permission form below to me no later than Monday, February 3, 2020.

Good Luck and BATTLE ON!

Battle of the Bluestem permission form. One per teammate is needed.

Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky

Seventh grader Tristan Strong feels anything but strong ever since he failed to save his best friend when they were in a bus accident together. All he has left of Eddie is the journal his friend wrote stories in. Tristan is dreading the month he's going to spend on his grandparents' farm in Alabama, where he's being sent to heal from the tragedy. But on his first night there, a sticky creature shows up in his bedroom and steals Eddie's notebook. Tristan chases after it—is that a doll?—and a tug-of-war ensues between them underneath a Bottle Tree. In a last attempt to wrestle the journal out of the creature's hands, Tristan punches the tree, accidentally ripping open a chasm into the MidPass, a volatile place with a burning sea, haunted bone ships, and iron monsters that are hunting the inhabitants of this world. Tristan finds himself in the middle of a battle that has left black American folk heroes John Henry and Brer Rabbit exhausted. In order to get back home, Tristan and these new allies will need to entice the god Anansi, the Weaver, to come out of hiding and seal the hole in the sky. But bartering with the trickster Anansi always comes at a price. Can Tristan save this world before he loses more of the things he loves?
