3...2...1... Blast Off! Our school-wide annual reading incentive program sponsored by the Kane County Cougars and Six Flags Great America is about to begin.
Each individual astronaut (student) goal is 600 minutes of reading between January 11th and February 22nd. All students who reaches this goal will receive a ticket to Six Flags Great America Amusement park to be used in the summer and a ticket voucher for a Kane County Cougars baseball game on May 10th or 27th (includes a drawstring bag, hot dog and soft drink. Ticket and vouchers from all sponsors will be distributed in the spring to those students who turn in their tally sheet of 600 or more minutes.
On the last day of each week, a group of volunteers will total the hours read during the previous week. As a team reads, their class astronauts will move across the White Eagle Galaxy Map in the LMC. The more each team reads, the farther their class astronaut will move through the galaxy. The winning team from each grade level will have a class pizza party at the end of the program. In addition, there will be weekly recognition for the class and individuals that read the most that week. So put on your reading helmet and prepare for take off as we blast off on a reading adventure!

Do you want to have some fun? Reading?? Prizes?? Get a team together and battle it out for the champion of Bluestem! If you would like to participate, get a team together and pick a name. Your team can consist of 2, 3, or 4 players. Your teammates can be any 3rd - 5th grader at White Eagle.
A good idea when choosing your teammates: They should be people you can work well with in a team atmosphere. Teammates are required to have read at least 5 of the books for your team. At least one of your teammates should have read any books that you or the other teammate have not, so your team will be able to answer questions about ALL the books. Remember the more books your team reads, the better prepared your will be!
Here is how the battle will work: You and your teammates will answer questions about the books on the list. The top 2 teams that accumulate the most points with correct answers during the White Eagle school battle will advance to the Crosstown Battle at Graham Elementary on March 12, 2019. Right now we have 15 other schools that will participate in the Crosstown Battle.
Important Dates:
· Team Slips turned in no later than Friday, February 1, 2019.
· White Eagle Bluestem Battle on March 4, 2019 from 3:45-4:30 p.m.
· Crosstown Battle (other District 204 elementary schools) March 12, 2019 at Graham Elementary School 5:00-6:00.

Good Luck and BATTLE ON!

It’s homework time for the little red chicken, who has just learned about something every good story should have: an elephant of surprise. Or could it be an element of surprise (as her amused papa explains)? As they dive in to story after story, looking for the part that makes a reader say “Whoa! I didn’t know that was going to happen,” Papa is sure he can convince Chicken he’s right. After all, there are definitely no elephants in “The Ugly Duckling,” “Rapunzel,” or “The Little Mermaid” — or are there? Elephant or element, something unexpected awaits Papa in every story, but a surprise may be in store for the little red chicken as well.
The Internet pretty much runs on cute animal photos, but "cute" is so much more than clickbait kittens and insta-pups. Cute is for feathery-gilled axolotls (pronounced: ax-uh-LOT-ulz), shy pygmy hippos, poisonous blue dragons, and armored pangolins. All of these animals are cute, but they've also adapted remarkable ways to survive in their unique environments.
Mr. Monkey learns a trick.
He can’t wait to put on a show!
But first he has to find the school.
What could possibly go wrong?

And she’ll have to learn fast. The city of ghosts is more dangerous than she ever imagined.
In one day, four lives weave together in unexpected ways. Virgil Salinas is shy and kindhearted and feels out of place in his crazy-about-sports family. Valencia Somerset, who is deaf, is smart, brave, and secretly lonely, and she loves everything about nature. Kaori Tanaka is a self-proclaimed psychic, whose little sister, Gen, is always following her around. And Chet Bullens wishes the weird kids would just stop being so different so he can concentrate on basketball.
They aren’t friends, at least not until Chet pulls a prank that traps Virgil and his pet guinea pig at the bottom of a well. This disaster leads Kaori, Gen, and Valencia on an epic quest to find missing Virgil. Through luck, smarts, bravery, and a little help from the universe, a rescue is performed, a bully is put in his place, and friendship blooms.
