Week of February 16th
ELA- Unit 3 came to a close with us reading persuasive texts as to why the arts are importatnt. This unit of creativity and imagination inspired many creative projects in class.
Writing- After reading many versions of The Little Red Hen, students then chose their favorite version of the fable. Ask your student to retell the version that they liked the most. We use the prompts Somebody -Wanted-But-So.
Word Study- This past week we tackled words with the -or, -ore chunks. The class loves playing a version of Battleship to practice decoding words. You might see them labled as Roll and Read.
Math- This unit dives deep into place value. By the end of the unit students will be additing 2 two-digit numbers. I remind parents to NOT teach classic math algorhims such as "carry the one". It is very important that students approach these problems using conrete models and looking at adding the tens together, the ones together and then put ones and tens together. See the example to the right.
Science- Our new unit teaches us about sound and light. This week we were sound effect creators for a rain storm and a cartoon ball. Have your student renact our rainstorm.
Week of February 2nd
ELA- The fable The Cow and the Tiger taught us the morale: keep your promises, tell the truth. Ask your student how they know a piece of text is a fable. ( talking animals, teaches a lesson, problem and solution)
Writing- Is it a rabbit or a duck? After reading the book Duck Rabbit!, students wrote their opinion whether it was a duck or rabbit. Stusents made sure to use strong reasons for support. Ask your writer what their opinion was.
Word Study- Sneaky Y- wow can the letter -y be tricky. When the y is at the end of the word it can represent two sounds. The long sound of i or e. Ask your student what sound the -y takes at the end of the word tricky.
Math- Unit 4 was launched. This unit digs deep into place value. Reminder to look at the homework calendar to ensure you are doing the correct NIGHTLY homework. The homework calendar is posted in several spots on this website. (calendar or math page, to the right)
Science- There are day patterns AND night patterns. This week we took a peek at the patterns of the moon.
Permission Slip Valentines Letter
Each night students have been assigned a math page to complete in their math workbook. This math workbook was sent home last week with a homework calendar attached. Students are not required to return these homework pages unless they want to be part of the homework raffle. Every Friday I will randomly pull a completed homework page that was turned in to receive a raffle prize, My thought is that this raffle opportunity might make homework time less of a struggle at home. No obligation to participate.
