Last Week of December
ELA- Students finished their Unit 2 inquiry project. Students were given the task to persuade a zookeeper to add a new animal to the zoo. Students researched facts and then wrote a persuasive letter to a zookepper explaining why the animal should be added to the zoo, Students included a diagram of their animal. SO MANY skills were utilized to complete this project. Students should be very proud of their work!
Word Study- Understanding the syllable pattern of VCe ( vowel, consonant, silent e) is essential to our students tackling new words.
Math-We headed into the new year reviewing many skills: addition, subtraction, missing addends, forward/backward counting. See the photo gallery.
Science/Social- Your child brought home thier first big assignment to be completed at home. Students are asked to present to the class about a family tradition. Think of something that your family does every year, trip to the lake, make pumpkin cookies, Pajama Movie Day, decorate the house.... See the letter sent home for more details. Projects are due January 23rd.
SEL- We say good-bye to our table groups and will have new teams in January.
Technology- See the photo gallery to see how we coded light shows for our gingerbread houses using Sams Lab. 3 lights, all different colors, all on different time intervals! Success!

Week of December 8th-
ELA- We discovered the genre of drama. Characters, setting, dialogue and plot.
Writing- We read the book I Wanna a Iguana to introduce persuasive writing. Then students took a virtual field trip through a zoo. Next students will write a persuasive letter to a zookeeper explaining which animal they think should be added to the zoo..
Word Study- Students have become fluent with c-v-c . The next syllable pattern to master are words with c-v-c-e.
Math- It is important that students see the relationship between addition and subtraction. Two strategies that students practiced are Take from Ten and Counting On.
Science/Social- Why are polar bears white? The key word is camouflage. After looking for moths hidden in our "Brookdale Forest", students then camouflaged a moth to hide in the room. Ask your student about where they hid their moth.
SEL- Earlier in our unit we learned that sometimes accidents happen. We discussed the importance of giving an apology.
