Introduction to Multi Media and Mass Communication Tools: From Theory to Practice

The Department of Multimedia and Mass Communication of Indraprastha College for Women, University of Delhi organised a 4 day International Webinar on ‘Introduction to Multimedia and Mass Communication: From Theory to Practice’ from the 25th to the 28th of August.
The first day of the webinar began with an inaugural address by the Honorable Principal, Dr. Babli Moitra Saraf who addressed the issues of online connectivity in all industries. She discussed the importance of staying connected even during a pandemic and encouraged everyone to enhance the professional skill set. It was followed by a session discussing the effect of pandemic on media industry by Ms Tanushree, Assistant Professor in the Dept of Multimedia and Mass Communication at IPCW, where she highlighted the effect of the Pandemic on the various branches of the Media industry. The session was followed by an interactive session where the speaker addressed the concerns raised by the students the future in the Media industry.
The first day was concluded by a session teaching the audience to use ‘Online Tools for Video Production and News Gathering’ by Mr. Gagan Gera, Assistant Professor in the Department of Multimedia and Mass Communication at IPCW. In the session the speaker elaborated on the basics of Video Production from accessible devices like mobile phones and editing through easily available software available online. Assignments were given to students, to give them a thorough and better understanding of the tools demonstrated in the session. The session was followed by an interactive session where the speaker addressed the concerns raised by the students regarding the changing trends of online and digital film-making.
The second day began with an informative session on ‘Artificial System and Expert Systems and Beyond’ headed by Mr. RK Singh, Former Engineer in Chief at Doordarshan. This session gave students particularly interesting insights, on AI systems, data analysis and the complicated process that is data science. The session was followed by an interactive session where the speaker addressed the concerns about the lack of awareness about this topic amongst the audience.
The second session of the day, ‘Understanding the New Wave of Radio: Making Online Radio Shows’ was held by Ms. Mrinal Singh, Technical Expert to the Department of Multimedia and Mass Communication, IPCW. She elaborated the audience with a meticulous and analytical insight to the art of making radio shows, and the strenuous process and planning behind it. She also shed light on the process of Online Radio shows and its production with a demonstration of free as well as online software. The session was followed by an interactive session where the speaker addressed the concerns raised by the students regarding changing trends in Radio Production.
The last session of the day was on the pros and cons on Digital Marketing Research by Mr. Praveen Ahluwalia, President of Client Management at Market Pulse, wherein he discussed the theory and practice behind a successful market research, something that resonated well with students. The session was followed by an interactive session where the speaker addressed the concerns raised by the participants about the online mode of quantitative and qualitative research for brands and the scope of collecting data from tier 1 and tier 2 cities.
On to the third day, the first session opened with great enthusiasm. The topic being covered was ‘Intricacies of Copyright Law in India’, by Dr. Alka Chawla, Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi. Copyright laws, infringement and intellectual rights have always been a controversial and interesting subject, and Dr. Chawla gave the students a very deep and easily comprehensible legal aspect to the issue, this session was particularly interactive. The session was followed by a long discussion and queries that were addressed by the speaker.
The second session was on the Insights on Methodologies to Avoid Plagiarism, by Dr. Shubhda Chaudhary, Assistant Professor at the MMC department at Indraprastha College for Women, DU and Consulting Editor to the Citizen. Following which, the the third and last session was on the Online teaching and learning of Graphic Design and Image making by Dr. Aahana B. Chopra, Assistant Professor to the Department of Multimedia and Mass communication at IPCW. These practical sessions were enjoyed and imbibed well by students and teachers alike. The curious queries of the participants were ardently addressed by each speaker.
The last day was a particularly insightful one; the session was headed by Dr. Roseann M. Mandziuk, esteemed Professor at Texas State University and a Fulbright Scholar on the Online Learning Paradigms in the USA. It was an honor to have Dr. Mandziuk talk about the newly developed paradigm of online classes, the students and faculty found this session interactive, well researched and thoroughly interesting. The participants were curious to understand the Indian shift of classes in comparison to the US mode and their questions were enthusiastically addressed by the speaker.
The 4 day webinar finally came to an end with an address by the coordinator of the department Dr. Rekha Sethi who lauded the efforts of the coordinators and the participants to make the event a success. She highlighted the fact that it is the need of the hour to understand the digital world and upgrade ourselves to keep up with the changing times.
The webinar got an overwhelming response with more than 100 people as audience every day. It succeeded in its purpose on giving the audience a better understanding of mass media, and communication studies, especially in today’s time.
