Welcome back! We hope you had a lovely restful break and are exciting for our time ahead together! We are thrilled to present the Year 3 curriculum newsletter for the first half of the summer term, where you can explore the incredible learning opportunities that await your children during this upcoming period. You will also see the words that will be used for the spelling assessments this half term.
In English, we will be reading 'The Accidental Prime Minister', a fun fiction story about a young boy who becomes Prime Minister and creates many unbelievably silly laws! Through this, we will be writing a mini-parliament debate, where they will be creating a manifesto to be voted the best political party.
In Maths, we will be focusing on fractions and time. We will learn how to add and subtract fractions. Afterwards, we will learn about time, relating this knowledge to everyday life such as learning how many days are in a month and a year.
This half term our Science topic is 'light' where we will observe how light is produced and how shadows are formed. There will be experiments conducted to see how changing variables affects light travel as well as understanding how reflections work.
In Geography, we will be learning about Egypt, with a particular focus on the River Nile and it's comparison to last half term's learning of the River Thames. For this topic we will be looking at maps to determine the topographical features of Egypt, as well as further exploring the capital, the use of land and how Egypt has changed over time.
The children will be exploring how to use search engines and their efficiency. For this, we will be looking at how to purhchase items online as how to search for and share information online.
Additionally, the class will be learning about what to do when they are faced with something concerning online.
This half term in R.E, we will be exploring the importance of the the teachings in Sikhism. We will learn about the Gurdwara, the place of worship and it's significance in Sikhism. We will then answer the question: "How do the lives of Sikhs show they follow rules in their lives?"
This year, PE will be split into two sessions per week to keep in line with the DfE guidance of 90 minutes of PE per week. We will be applying throwing skills and learning how to play competitive rounders.
In DT, we will be creating bridges, linking to our learning of rivers. We are going to be testing which materials are best suited for creating these bridges as well as testing them against different weights to ensure they are strong enough or need to be adapted.
The children will be using Charanga to consider how music can help us making peace with any conflicts and how it makes a difference in the world.
In French, we will be learning how to count to 30, speak about our birthdays as well as be able to recognize the twelve months in the year.
