Welcome back, we hope you had a wonderful Easter break. We are thrilled to present the Nursery curriculum newsletter for the first half of the summer term, where you can explore the incredible learning opportunities that await your child during this upcoming period.
This half term, our learning is inspired by the theme: ‘Sustainable Development’. We will read ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle and find out about the life cycle of a butterfly. We will also use our core text to learn about healthy eating. Through our learning we will gain more appreciation of living things and their environment, understanding that everyone can do things to improve their surroundings and help to take care of the environment and other living things.
Our focus will be on Foundations for Phonics which is part of Little Wandle, using rhymes and stories. They will be planned activities linked to the rhymes which will support children's understanding to be able to respond to questions. Environmental sounds will also be done in small groups. Children will also be involved in games to support their blending skills. We will be learning the following sounds from little wandle; j, v, w, y and z.
We will be exploring the importance of caring and sharing. We will be encouraging the children to show sensitivity to other people’s feeling and needs, and what we can do to help and include others when they are excluded. Children will be encouraged to ask questions and to suggest ways that they could solve a problem. We want to promote children's independence and individuality, but also promote our children to be sensitive to the needs of others. We will also continue to develop as our classroom community grows, with new children joining the nursery class. We will build our confidence when taking part in group activities, practise taking turns and sharing and understand how we can support each other in class.
This half term, we will be exploring patterns and shapes in our Maths learning. Children will do this by recognising and sorting patterns, as well as going on 'pattern hunts'. Children will also develop their understanding of shapes by exploring 2D and 3D shapes through songs, pictures, games as well as exploring shapes in our environment.
We will take on different roles in the outdoor area and use natural materials to create collages. Children will also practise moving to music, exploring different ways to express themselves through rhyme time. As part of their art outcome, the children will be creating butterflies, exploring a range of bright colours and materials.
We will develop our appreciation of living things and the environment, understanding that we can and need to take care of it. The children will be identifying a range of insects and mini beasts in the outside environment. We will explore the natural world, thinking about weather, seasons and how all living beings are connected.
