Maundene Weekly

"Find out who you are and do it on purpose!"

Dear Parents/Carers,

We just want to say a huge thank you to our PTA for organising such an amazing Christmas Fair - Santa and his reindeers even turned up! Thank you to everyone who attended this event and supported the Maundene Community.

On Monday, Year 6 had an exciting start to the week where they participated in a Djembe Drumming Workshop. The children loved exploring different rhythms and tones of the djembe drums and even performed to one another! During their science lesson in the afternoon, Year 3 presented their learning about Animals including Humans through a Double Page Spread. A Double Page Spread is planned in at the end of each term in history/geography or science lessons currently and are an opportunity for the children to answer a question about all of their learning that has taken place throughout the term. The children can present their learning in a unique way, but they are encouraged to recall all of their prior learning and reflect on the key vocabulary that they have been learning.

Throughout their maths lesson on Tuesday, Year 2 used concrete materials to support them in adding two two-digit numbers together. The children particularly focused on using dienes, adding the ones together and then the tens together carefully. It was lovely to observe the children working collaboratively and supporting one another with their learning. Year 4 had an engaging English lesson on Tuesday where they were writing sentences about Skippy, our school Mentor dog, who has currently had surgery and sadly cannot be in school with us. The children applied resilience during their English lesson as they were using parenthesis within their writing to add additional information.  In the afternoon, Year 6 were working on their sculptures which are inspired by the artist, Jason deCaires Taylor. He is a British sculptor and is best known for installing underwater sculptures on the ocean floor that develop naturally into artificial coral reefs which local communities and marine life depend on and promote ocean conservation to highlight the current climate crisis. We cannot wait to see their final outcomes!

JLT and Head Pupils have recently been gathering pupil voice about expectations and behaviour during break time and lunch time. As a result of this, the team have come together and identified key strengths and next steps that they believe we need to be focusing on across the school. From this, Head Pupils spent the last couple of weeks creating their own assembly slides to present to the school about expectations and the importance of respecting all adults across the school. During Wednesday morning's assembly, Head Pupils presented their slides to the school. We feel extremely proud of our Pupil Leadership Team and the key roles that they are playing in driving school improvement. Well done! In additon to this, we also had Celebration Assembly where many achievements and successes were celebrated. Well done everybody for your hard work and resilience across the curriculum this term so far. In the afternoon on Wednesday, Year 1 created Double Page Spreads in their history lesson which focused on their learning about Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. The children displayed a lot of enthusiasm when presenting their learning on an A3 page and sharing all of the facts that they now know about these two significant historical figures.

In the afternoon on Thursday, Year 2 and Year 5 enjoyed reading with their buddies in pairs. It was wonderful to see the children being so supportive of each other and sharing their favourite books. In addition to this, Year 6 had their Learning Exhibition on Thursday afternoon which was a perfect opportunity to share their learning with adults and carers. Thank you to so many of you who attended this event as it means a lot to the children.

The children in EYFS enjoyed the final day of exploring this week's provision on Friday which was 'Winter-themed'. They loved making play dough snowmen, painting winter scenes and using their phonics to write Christmas lists for Father Christmas. During their English lesson, Year 1 enjoyed their final day of diving into Winter-themed poetry this week. The children focused on using descriptive language about winter and related the vocabulary to their five senses.

It has certainly been a busy week! We hope you have a wonderful weekend and we are excited to welcome you to all of our Christmas Events in the upcoming weeks. We hope to see many of you attend,

Miss Capes, Mrs Jackson and the Maundene Team
