Maundene Weekly

“Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened."

Dear Parents/Carers,

We hope you have had a lovely week!

Year 3 had an exciting start to the week where they were investigating facts about plastic pollution from their core text, 'What a Waste'. The children were shocked when reading the the statistics throughout the book, one fact in particular which read, '92% of the world's people are breathing polluted air'.

On Tuesday, the school celebrated World Mental Health Day by wearing yellow clothing. Thank you to everyone who donated to Young Minds. To celebrate this day, Year 5 spent time sharing positive affirmations in the morning and Year 1 enjoyed reading their books in the outdoor environment as the children discussed their interest in using the environment outside of the classroom more often. In the afternoon on Tuesday, the children in Year 2 discussed worries and how important it is to share worries with somebody that you trust. Year 2 then made their own worry monsters and even named them!

In the afternoon on Tuesday, the Junior Leadership Team from Year 3-6 participated in a Food Tasting activity which was led by Chartwells. The children had the opportunity to taste three new main meals and  two desserts, giving their feedback and suggestions for further improving our school menu. The children really made us proud and Chartwells were extremely complimentary of them. Well done JLT

During their handwriting lesson on Wednesday, the children in EYFS demonstrated resilience when writing the letter 'f' which was their sound of the day. Letter formation is extremely important, particularly for EYFS children as this is where they learn the basics of where to start when writing each letter. Please help your children at home to form their letters correctly as this supports them when they begin to join letters and words together. In the afternoon on Wednesday, the Year 6 children enjoyed the start of their investigation which focused on the conditions that cause mould to grow on bread. The children decided on their investigation question and identified the dependent, independent and controlled variables.

Thursday was School Photo Day and the children were all wearing their best smiles in preparation for individual and sibling photos. Thank you to Mrs Spice for organising this day - it was fantastic! In the afternoon on Thursday, the children in Year 4 completed their double page spread which focused on the impact of war in different countries. The children presented their learning in their own way, particularly focusing on including statistics and key facts that they have been learning about throughout the term.

Today Eagles had their class assembly where the children shared their learning from the term. We are very proud of their achievements, particularly their use of engaging vocabulary throughout their pieces of writing. Thank you to all of the parents and carers who attended this event.

Have a relaxing weekend,

Miss Capes, Mrs Jackson and the Maundene Team

Double Page Spreads

At Maundene, we are continuously working with the Inspire Partnership to review our curriculum so that it provides our children with ample opportunities to deepen their learning. As a result of this, we have introduced 'Double Page Spreads'. These are completed at the end of a geography, history or science learning journey and are an opportunity for the children to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding. The children in Year 1-6 have commenced 'Double Page Spreads', therefore you will see a double page full of learning which is presented in a way that your child has chosen at the end of each term. Below are a few examples from the year groups who have trialled 'Double Page Spreads' so far this year.
