How does it work?
Food Forward was a cutting-edge innovation accelerator program launched in 2018 by WWF’s Food Practice and was completed in partnership with Impact Hub. The more than 10-month journey invited nine WWF Food Focal Point teams from across the network to develop pragmatic and impactful solutions aimed at solving the world’s most urgent food system challenges affecting people and the planet.
Most WWF teams participating in the program had previously applied for the 2018 Food Practice Innovation Funds. These teams were invited to revisit their initial Innovation Fund concepts, ideate solutions to the identified challenges, and then prototype and test their ideas in an iterative process.
The program utilised a combination of regular group training, one-on-one coaching (between Impact Hub coaches and the WWF teams), tool development, and an in-person workshop for each team. It followed the steps of Design Thinking (Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test). By the end of the program, the teams’ prototypes were uploaded to the Funding Platform and five projects were selected for partial or full funding by the Food Practice Leader and Leadership Team.
What problem does it solve?
The Food Practice’s work is aimed at transforming global food systems for people and the planet by working towards sustainable production of food, a reduction of food loss and waste, and the adoption of sustainable diets. Achieving these ambitious outcomes will require more than ‘business as usual’. Food Forward is an innovative program that accelerates the move toward those objectives.
