As a public charter school, learners participate in educational activities for every school day of the year. The school year is broken into nine learning periods (LPs) that are approximately 20 days each. On each school day, learners work on the assignments listed on their individualized learning plan and assignment work record (ILP/AWR).
Throughout the year, learners will review learning outcomes and set individual goals. They will learn to evaluate their progress toward those goals, starting at a basic level when they are younger and improving their ability to self-assess over time.
The ILP/AWR serves as the assignment work record and lists assignments and activities that must be completed by the learner during each learning period. The ILP/AWR also serves as a grade book. The EF will review the assignments at weekly check ins or learning period meetings to provide feedback, suggestions, and grade determinations. The ILP/AWR is maintained by the EF, and the unique learning styles and needs of the learner are considered in the development of the grade-level assignments reflecting state standards.
The primary goal of the ILP/AWR is to ensure that each child is working toward grade-level standards, personal goals, and social-emotional growth.
As an independent study public charter school, iLEAD Hybrid Exploration has guidelines that govern how attendance is calculated. Attendance is granted by evaluating two components - the daily engagement (activity log) and completion of assigned work (time value).
Learning Log / Daily Engagement: Learners must be engaged in assigned educational activities listed on the ILP/AWR on every school day listed on the iLEAD Hybrid Exploration school calendar. At the end of each learning period (LP), the parent/guardian will sign a learning log confirming the number of days the learner was engaged in learning. Parents/guardians do not need to track the time spent engaged in learning as the assignments on the ILP/AWR will reflect the work load for the LP. If a parent reports the learner did not engage in any learning activity on a school day, the learner would be marked absent.
ILP/AWR Assignment Completion / Time Value: Learners must complete, show, and discuss the body of work with their facilitator in all academic subjects as assigned on the ILP/AWR. Generally, the ILP/AWR will reflect about an hour of work per subject per day (a little less for TK/K). If a learner does not complete the assigned work in a given subject for the learning period, they will not receive full time value for that subject.
In the example above, the parent reported that the learner was sick for two days. The EF notes these absences on the learning log on the right, so daily engagement for this LP is 18 days out of 20. To the left is the time value determination. The learner completed all assigned work in subjects 1 and 4 (5 days attendance for each of those subjects). However, there is missing work in subject 2 (4 days of attendance out of 5 possible). Plus, no work sample was submitted for subject 3, meaning no days can be credited for attendance in that subject. Based on work completed and samples submitted, time value is 14 days. Attendance reported for for this learner for this LP is 14 days, the lesser of these two numbers (daily engagement = 18 days and time value = 14 days).
There are optional, live, synchronous instruction times offered to learners (daily for TK-3, weekly for 4th-12th). Some of the synchronous instruction sessions may offer a directed course of study while others may offer individualized or small group support for learners. At this time, synchronous instruction is being offered virtually.
Your facilitator will be able to share the synchronous instruction times offered for you.
In addition to the optional synchronous instruction times, iLEAD Hybrid Exploration offers opportunities for learners to interact and socialize with learners from other rosters. There are field studies events, book clubs, intervention sessions, Lunch Bunch (online social lunch time), counseling groups, high school clubs, and more! At this time, the live interaction offerings are all virtual.
Each week your EF will reach out to connect with you and your learner about your progress toward the ILP/AWR goals and to offer you support.
