Strong leaders are the key to the flourishing of any organization, and the IJCL is no exception. We are always looking for motivated individuals to step up and help lead as officers. If you feel that the IJCL has given you something worth repaying, we would strongly encourage you to take that step for the betterment of both yourself and the organization.
Being an officer is sure to grow your leadership skills.
As mentioned above, you get to give back to the organization that has (hopefully) given a lot to you.
You get to make friends with your fellow officers and meet people from around the state. While it does entail a lot of work, being an officer is actually very fun.
You get to go to all IJCL events for free!
Last but not least, being a state officer for an organization of this size looks really good on both your transcript and your resume.
Trust me, there’s no reason to be! I’ve found the best way to fight the natural nervousness of running and holding office is to be prepared. Below are two very helpful slideshows that I referenced constantly when I was preparing to run. They’re very helpful for getting a general picture. For more specific details on officer positions, the IJCL handbook is the boss. Talking to people who have run for office before is also very helpful. If you don’t know anyone who has, you can always email me!
Great! The first step is to submit your online application. You’ll need to get both your parent/guardian’s and your sponsor’s permission to do this. The application asks you to fill out some basic information and also some open-ended questions. Be aware that your answers to the application will be passed out for chapters to read during the election process at State Convention. The application will be open on October 15 and will close on February 13. You will need to print, sign and mail your application after you submit it online. After that, you’ll want to construct your platform, plan campaign materials (see slideshow below for the rules), and write speeches. You need to have a three-minute speech prepared for addressing the whole assembly. You should also have a one-minute speech prepared for Nominations Committee, but the slideshow below will give you more information on that.
Thank you for considering running for office. I hope to see you at State Convention!
