Instructional System

The instructional system of IGNOU is more learner-oriented and learner-centred. In this system, the learner is an active participant in the teaching-learning process. Most of the instruction is imparted through distance modes of communication rather than face-to-face modes of communication. The University follows a multi-media approach for instruction. So, the instructional system of MSc(MACS) also follows multi-media approach i.e. self-instructional print material, audio-video programmes, assignments, face-to-face counselling sessions / contact sessions, project work, teleconferencing and interactive radio counselling, among others.

Self Instructional Print Material

The print material prepared by the University is self instructional in nature. Each course has been divided into a number of Blocks, generally 4 Blocks for a 4 credit course. Each Block consists of a number of Units (lessons). Normally, all the Units covered in one Block have a thematic unity. The first page of each Block indicates the contents of each Block i.e., the number and titles of the Units covered in that Block. This is followed by a brief introduction to the Block. This Block introduction explains the total coverage of the Block as a whole as well as the coverage of each Unit in that Block. Each Unit is structured to facilitate self study for you. The section on Objectives briefly states what we expect you to attain when you have completed the Unit. In Introduction, there is an attempt to forge a link with the topics of the previous Units and .the topic to be covered in the present Unit. This is followed by the main body of the Unit, which is divided into various sections and subsections. In the main body there are a few self-check exercises under the caption exercises. Answers to these exercises are given in the section Solutions/Answers at the end of the Unit. At the end of the Unit, we briefly summarise the contents of the Unit.

Audio Video Programmes

In addition to the print material, we have developed audio and video programmes for each course. The audio-video material is supplementary to the printed material. Hence, we advise you to make use of it, as that will help you to understand the subject better. Video programmes are normally of 25 –30 minutes duration.

Assignments

Assignments are an integral and compulsory component of the instructional system. There is one tutor-marked assignment for each theory course. Students will have to work on these assignments. Each student should submit the assignment responses to the Coordinator/Programme In-charge of the Study Centre in accordance with the given assignments’ submission schedule.

For the courses with a practical component you have to submit a file. For each programming session, the file should have the source code of the programme in case it is a programming exercise. In case the session has some activity, the file should have the commands and the output obtained. Each session should be signed by the practical counsellor. This will be used for internal assessment.

Web Based Video Counselling

In distance or online education, contact between the learners and their tutors/counsellors is an important activity. The purpose of such a contact is to answer some of your questions and clarify your doubts. We use live streaming and web based video counselling to reach to our learners.

Teleconferencing

Teleconferencing sessions are conducted via satellite through interactive Gyan Darshan Channel from the University studios as per the schedule made available to the Regional and Study Centres. Teleconferencing is an effective means of interaction between the learners, experts and others concerned with the programme. It provides an interesting opportunity to the students to interact with the faculty members at the headquarters, and other experts/eminent scholars in the field. The learners will have to go to the nearest reception centre at the scheduled time for taking the benefit of this facility. Click here to view the Gyan Darshan Schedule related to your programme.

Interactive Radio Counselling

The University has started interactive counselling through AIR network all over India. You can participate in it by tuning in to your area Radio station. Experts from various discipline areas are available for this counselling. Students can put across their questions to these experts by using the telephone. The telephone numbers are announced by respective Radio Stations. This counselling is available on every Sunday between 4 and 5 in the evening. GyanDhara can also be viewed from the IGNOU website. You can also post your query and questions online.

Project Work

The programme has a project worth 4 credits in the final semester. You may consult the project guide for all the details regarding the project component.

Web Enabled Academic Support

Web Enabled Academic Support, commonly known as WEAS is a scheme initiated by National Centre for Innovation in Distance Education (NCIDE) with the aim to provide an interactive one-stop programme portal, that will help the students in getting academic support on the programme they are enrolled in.
