... I really mean this - after 20 years of experience in supporting IB Diploma , Careers and Courses students!
We know receiving poor results are a disappointment after all that hard work, and if this affects your DREAM University placement that this is tough!
BUT WE ALSO know given time, ALL students and I mean ALL find a place that they would like to STUDY and in the long term LOVE their UNIVERSITY experience. And yes they go onto become successful people - believe it or not.
Often these difficulties, and crises are what make us better and more equipped to deal with life and its ups and downs! However the information below should help you navigate the next few weeks!
Students will be able to access results on the 6th of July. Results are usually released in 15-minute intervals from 12:00 noon based on the time zone of your school. For IGB, this should occur at 12:15 GMT on July 6th, which is 8:15 p.m. Malaysian time.
Go to this website to access the results
You will need to enter your personal code and PIN. The personal code should already be familiar and follow the format abc123, the PIN is highly confidential. Both codes were given to you as a paper/hardcopy (and students yes you were asked to take a photo of this on their smartphone!) and you used to check your TOK essay and Extended Essay uploads.
If you CANNOT access initially, please try in a different BROWSER first as this often is the issue - if you still cannot login contact Mr. Perkins and Mr. North who should be able to help!
The document to the right is the IB's Candidate Results Pack with lots of information and answers to FAQs. If you have been listening during Mr. Perkins assemblies you will know it all - but if not download and have a read!
Are you unsure why you have failed - here are the requirements below: -
"The minimum threshold for the award of the diploma is 24 points. If a candidate scores less than 24 points, the diploma is not awarded:-
• CAS requirements have not been met.
• There is an“N” awarded for TOK, the EE or for a contributing subject.
• There is a grade E awarded for TOK and/or the EE.
• There is a grade 1 awarded in a subject/level.
• There are more than two grade 2s awarded (SL or HL).
• There are more than three grade 3s or below awarded (SL or HL).
• The candidate has gained less than 12 points on HL subjects. (For candidates who register for four HL
subjects, the three highest grades count.)*
• The candidate has gained less than 9 points on SL subjects.
• The candidate has received a penalty for academic misconduct from the Final Award Committee.**"
* This is the one that can get a number of students.
** If you receive a P or it says results are withheld then this is usually an Academic Honesty issue - be patient, the IB will be in contact with Mr. Perkins and an investigation will unfold over the coming weeks.
Final Diploma Certificate
This is sent to the school (it cannot be sent anywhere else) end of August beginning of September. The Senior School office will then send out to students contact addresses (if the student filled in the correct google form immediately.)
If the Senior School office has not received an ongoing contact address it will be kept in the office, until the students supplies the office with this address. Please contact USHA with any questions regarding this.
Interim Summary of Candidate Results
When students log in to the IB results system - they will be able to download an interim results report /transcript with grades and subjects. This is not a certified document so Universities often will not accept this as proof of results. The Senior School office, can stamp a copy of this which some Universities will accept - see below.
Request for Results Service
You have been asked to provide details of your University offers, and the Mr. Perkins will has placed these into the IB System before the end of the examinations. When results are finalised on the 6th of July - these are then sent automatically to the Universities that were entered.
If you did not supply these, when the results are released it is too late for Mr. Perkins to enter them, please see below (YOU were warned.)
Request for IB results Transcript after Results Release (e.g. after 4th July)
Students can contact the IB directly through this website - to request an official transcript of the results before the final certificate is sent to them. Their is a cost associated with this.
Interim School Stamped and Headed Summary of Results
The Senior School office will be able to place the interim summary of results onto headed paper for students and send this to them, or to a University if requested. This may not always be enough for Universities but sometimes it is accepted. This will only be done if the above Request for Results service has not been completed.
Overall High School Transcript from Regents
If you would like a copy of your final transcript from IGB with all reports data etc, then please contact Mr. North and/or the Senior School office who can organise this to be sent to you electronically or on paper.
It is possible to get an "Enquiry upon Results", which is a remark on externally assessed components such as the exams, but NOT the Internal Assessments. Whether you do this should be considered very carefully!
Here is the process you will need to go through with some very IMPORTANT POINTS to consider : -
1) Initially Contact via email and copy in both Mr. North and Mr. Perkins (please use email initially as then we have a long term record of your request, you may use chat to follow up) to Mr. Perkins / Mr. North asking for advice
2) Mr. Perkins will send advice the week after results - on requested subjects. He receives further data by the end of the first week - with individual paper grades, IA grades etc and so will be able to give better advice after this .
IMPORTANT: Note the initial report you have does not say the number of individual marks that you are off to the next grade boundary but the percentage points. E.g. a 1 percentage point off - could be 7/8 marks overall across all the papers and IA! So be careful this number is just an indicator.
3) REMEMBER grades can go down as well as up - if you ask for a remark
4) Don't ever remark TOK - it can easily go down! Be very careful with the Extended Essay as well.
5) Subjects such as Math's, Sciences are much less likely to change than essay based subjects as they are less open to interpretation. So pointless...
6) IF YOU DECIDE to go for the remark then when I send the advice I will also send an email that your parents must reply to in which they agree and gives consent for the remark, they agree to pay for the remark around 600 Ringgit (changes slightly each year due to exchange rates - approximately 150 SGD) and acknowledges the grade can go up or down.
7) When the remark is in - it takes up to two weeks for it to come through - and I will email the result to you.
FINAL DEADLINE FOR REMARKS IS 1st SEPTEMBER - BUT SIMPLY DO NOT LEAVE IT THIS LATE!
Finally we may contact you if we see in the data that it would be a good idea to remark - but it is still down to you and your parents to make the decision.
One anecdote is I had one student who failed with 23 points, but I contacted him after a week and suggested a remark in a certain subject - and he passed. He said he was not going to contact me, as he was American and had already got into University.
So please trust our experience and advice - if you follow this - I tend to have success rates of 5-8% of remarks going up. However I have had students ignore me, and get everything remarked, and paid equivalent over 1200 SGD and had their score go down by two grades! BE WARNED!
One final piece of ADVICE if you do not need a remark to get into University - there is little point - no-one including you will remember if you get a B or C in your Extended Essay in 6 months time let alone in 5 years time.
Please this is a last resort, for most students through the process of remarks contacting Universities etc. they find a place to which they want to go, and will be happy studying. It is better to move on if possible.
I have had students who have taken 6 resits, and got worse grades as it is very difficult as a student to get the motivation together yet again (while all your friends are partying) and study! You may have noticed two students resiting in the MAY session, one of those students has now sat the Chemistry examination 3 times!!!!!
My advice in terms of resits - is take one, or maximum two exams and no more so you can concentrate on lifting these grades.
Resits take place in what is called the NOVEMBER SESSION, you will need to be registered reasonably quickly although the final date for registration is end of July the longer you leave it the more money that it costs!
Please beware if there are syllabus changes, this will mean you have to study a different syllabus for the new examination - which is very difficult. Please also note you cannot redo your Internal Assessment. It is just the examinations you can resit.
Please contact Mr. Perkins or Mr. North who can give more information.
Overall we are always proud of your success and always want to share this with our regents Community. So please ensure to keep in touch and email us when you have confirmed a place that you are going to study, especially if it is a big change from your original plans. You can arrange to meet via Google meet with our University Counsellor Mr. North, or with Mr. Perkins during the week after results release to help and support you.
PLEASE REMEMBER EVEN IF YOUR RESULTS ARE a disappointment, and at the moment you do not have a place. From my experience over 20 years things ( I know I am repeating myself!) always work out in the end and all students find a pathway forward and ultimately success!
Below is what to do in different scenarios after you get your results:
Conditional offers: UK, Netherlands, Canada, Australia etc
Remember if you are unsure simply contact one of us, give us some time we will reply and are here to help!
You have been made a conditional offer from your top choice University and you have met or exceeded the offer and intend to attend :
Yes you are in, you have secured a place and will attend this institution. Please email your counselor ASAP to say that you have met the offer from .... for .... (state the name of the University and the course) and you will be attending this institution. Where there is an application system like UCAS for the UK, the University will change the offer to firm and then start sending information about the course and starting in September :)
You have been made a conditional offer from your top choice University and you have met or exceeded the offer but intend to ask for a deferral to the following year :
Yes you are in, you have secured a place and will attend this institution. However you need to contact the institution to ask for a deferral. Please email your counselor ASAP to say that you have met the offer from .... for .... (state the name of the University and the course) and you will be attending this institution, but will be deferring for a year. Please also keep us informed if the institution grants your request for a deferral please!
You have been made a conditional offer from your top choice University and you have missed the conditional offer for this University, but you have met the conditions of your second choice University :
Well done! Either wait for a confirmation email (or for systems like UCAS your firm to be declined and your insurance to be changed to Firm) from your first choice or open a communication with the admission officer of your second choice of University. Once you have heard then please email your counselor ASAP to say that you have met the offer from .... for .... (state the name of the University and the course) and you will be attending this institution.
Note for UK Universities if you miss the conditional offer by a small amount then some Universities will accept you so definitely worth phoning them to check. Some may also say wait until A Level results day and it is up to you to decide to wait, or to say no accept your Insurance offer.
You have been made a conditional offer from your top and second choice University and you have missed the conditional offers for these Universities, band so have no offer :
DON'T PANIC! Please contact Mr. north and Mr. Perkins ASAP and seek advice as mentioned above things will work out. I have had students holding offers for Oxford and miss the grades, and by the afternoon they have accepted a different offer at a great University for the same course! Oh and by the way they loved the University, and now are employed as a top lawyer earning lots of money in the City of London! IT ALL WORKS OUT IN THE END!
To the right is a handy infographic of what to do specifically for UK and UCAS offers on results day!
Below is what to do in different scenarios after you get your results:
Unconditional offers with no set conditions : US etc
5. You were admitted to a US institution, you paid your deposit and you IB results are within 3 points of your last progress report :
Well done - you will be attending this institution. While you do not need further counselling, you must email your counsellor and confirm your expected date of attendance.
6. You were admitted to a US Institution, but one of the following occurred: -
Your IB results are 4 points lower than your last report
You applied as an IB Diploma candidate but were not awarded the IB Diploma or
You did not pay your deposit
You applied for a deferral but it has not yet been granted
DON'T PANIC! You must take action to ensure your place. Please contact Mr. North and then contact the University to check if there are any issues.
7. You applied to a US Institution and you were waitlisted:
Please gather your correspondence and book a meeting with Mr. North.
Below is what to do in different scenarios after you get your results:
I have not applied yet: Australia for example, or am taking a GAP year before I apply
8. You were waiting on results and applying to a University / Country that has an admission entry usually in January
You are so lucky, now you have your results applications are so much easier, and for places like Australia if you have the points usually you are in :)
Simply start the application process as Mr. North would have explained to you - please contact us for any advice.
9. I am taking a GAP Year, when do I need to apply...
Have fun on the GAP YEAR, but remember to follow the same timelines as students who were applying for entry this year did. This includes the IGB deadlines for Early Applications / Medicine and Oxbridge on October 1st and normal Applications for most other Universities on December 1st. Your University Counsellor is here to help - so get in contact and keep them informed. Remember the application is much more your responsibility - so if you miss deadlines you will be to blame!
