We expect all students to take an Arts subject if they have the interest and ability, we consider it an excellent preparation in all areas of study at University and careers beyond this. The skillset gained is often what sets these students apart from many others. We recognise that some University requirements require students to take a different elective subject in Group 6 such as for Medicine students need to often take Chemistry and Biology however otherwise students should be encouraged to take an Arts subject.
All Arts subjects are Internally Assessed and so do not have examinations, which can also be invaluable for a student who reduces the stress and workload coming up to final examinations and so can often achieve higher.
Some important things to consider :-
For all Arts subjects our MYP programmes set all students to be successful within the Arts, for students transitioning into our DP/CP programmes it is recommended that they have had study in the Arts are in the previous two years.
Theatre is an excellent subject for all students who wish to improve their communication skills and confidence, it looks excellent it personal statements showing a wide breadth of skills and academics and US colleges especially value this. US Colleges and Universities particularly like the breadth that is shown when you study a Theatre course, and alongside the skills gained is often if not always an excellent choice for students.
Visual Arts especially at Higher Level does have a high workload in terms of time creating and in the Art Studio, however if this is a passion of yours then time will fly by.
Visual Arts or Design Technology are both subjects suitable for bringing portfolios of work together for either Arts foundation degrees or Architecture.
