Congratulations Astronauts! After our successful rocket launches last week, we are on our way to the moon! The next thing we need to think about is: How will we land on the moon? But first...how about some information about our moon!
Moon Facts (from www.nasa.gov):
Earth's moon is 223,491 miles away. We could drive from Iowa Falls to Kennedy Space Center in Florida almost 157 times!
24 humans have visited the moon, but only 12 have walked on it's surface. In 1969, Neil Armstrong was the first person to set foot on the moon. He was followed by fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin.
More than 105 robotic spacecraft have visited the moon.
The Earth is 3.7x larger than the moon. An approximate comparison could be the size of one pea (the moon) and one US nickel (the earth).
The last human to visit the moon was in 1972. NASA hopes to put the first female and next male back on the moon by 2024!
Remember:
Safety First: Ask for help with cutting.
Failure is Not and Option...even if your first designs don't work, keep trying. Get ideas from someone else in your house.
Have Fun!
Landing astronauts on another surface isn't as easy as it sounds. Think about trying to land a rocket on Earth. You would have to watch out for oceans, mountains, forests, and many other obstacles. The moon and other planets present the same kinds of challenges for our astronauts. Special equipment has to be designed in order for our astronauts to hit their target landing zone. In this activity, you get to be the engineer to design a way to drop a marble (or other item you have in your house) onto a specific target.
