Vocabulary:
International: made up of people or groups from different countries
Orbit: to travel around (something, such as a planet or moon) in a curved path : to make an orbit around (something)
Experiment: a scientific test in which you perform a series of actions and carefully observe their effects in order to learn about something
The International Space Station (ISS) is a large spacecraft that orbits around the Earth. Click Here to learn some fun facts about the ISS.
Have you ever wondered how astronauts eat in space? Where do they sleep? How do they exercise? Click Here to go to a NASA website that is full of videos about living on the ISS...they even show you where they go to the bathroom!! Or if you want the quick tour...Click Here to walk through the model ISS used for training at Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX (and yes they still talk about the bathroom).
The astronauts living on the ISS have a busy schedule. When they aren't eating, exercising, and doing maintenance on the station, one of their main jobs is to work on research experiments. On the ISS there are hundreds of experiments going on from plant studies to how zero gravity impacts the human body and even learning how to 3D print human organs! Scientists and researchers use the Scientific Method to help plan out their experiments.
Growing plants in space is one of the most important experiments for the astronauts on board ISS. Learning how to grow plants in space helps astronauts get the nutrition they need from fresh veggies during their long missions. This will be even more important as we attempt to send people to Mars.
Choose a challenge below (or do a combination) to complete this week. If you want to share out you can visit the Flipgrid page and look for the matching post. Password can be found where you found the link to this page.
Train like an Astronaut: The weather this week sounds nice so I want you to get outside and plan out an obstacle course to run through. Time yourself the first time through and then do it again to see if your time gets better! You could even make a chart and track you times every day this week!
Do an experiment: Click Here to watch an interview with two plant scientists that are helping the astronauts grow veggies in space. **Fun fact: Mrs. Van Hove and I actually got to meet Trent Smith from the video!
The end of the video shows an experiment you can do at home about how to grow a sprout from a popcorn kernel (Do not eat)! If you don't have popcorn at your house think about what else you could observe and study. Be creative, be safe, and have fun!
Build your own space station: Design and build your own space station using items around the house. You can use Legos, K'Nex, or other building materials you may have. Or Click Here to see an example that uses pop cans, bottles, and aluminum foil. **Remember to ask your parents for help!
