Welcome future astronauts! This might be the week you've all been waiting for...making and launching rockets.
Video of Apollo 11 when man first set foot on the moon July 16, 1969 (video has no sound)
Video of the last launch of the Space Shuttle Mission July 8, 2011.
Video of Falcon 9 cargo Launch July 2019.
May 27, 2020 Falcon 9 launches NASA's Commercial Crew to the ISS. First American astronauts to launch from American soil since 2011.
Always ask your parents for permission before starting your project.
No sharing straws!! If you don't have enough for everyone you can make your own by rolling up a piece of paper and taping it.
Never launch your rocket toward people.
Wear eye protection (goggles, glasses, sunglasses, etc.)
Your parents are Mission Control...they get to decide if and when your rocket will launch.
Don't forget your countdown...it makes sure everyone is safely out of the way before launch...and it's just fun!
Click Here to find instructions for a basic straw rocket. As you test your rocket, use the data sheets to record how far your rocket travels. (Tip: I learned the hard way when making my first straw rocket...make sure your rocket tube isn't wrapped too tightly around the straw or it will be too difficult to launch.)
**Extend your learning: Make changes to your rocket and keep launching.
How does the design change your rocket launch?
Which style of rocket worked best?
How do you control how far your rocket goes?
**This is a more advanced launcher. It will probably require a trip to the hardware store. Possibly an activity for after the COVID-19 restrictions lift. Click Here for the instructions.
