This town in situated in south-eastern Germany, 25 km east of Nuremberg, in the district Nürnberger Land. The city center has remained almost unchanged for centuries (old university building, Laurentius church, city gates, keeper's palace, old city houses).
OBJECTIVES
These are the objectives os this group mobility:
To improve communicative competence and to improve their knowledge of the English language, in particular, given that English is the vehicular language.
To develop social and civic competence, developing students' autonomy in order to become citizens of the 21st century.
To learn about different cultures and become respectful citizens.
To enrich their curriculum thanks to the different guided visits related to the history of Germany.
PROGRAMME OF ACTIVITIES
Both during our stay in Germany and during the stay of the group of Germans in the Basque Country, the structure of the activities is similar. During our stay in Altdorf, we made different visits to emblematic places in the surrounding area, all of which focused on the country's recent past. Afterwards, the students made oral presentations with the conclusions of the visits.
First of all, we visited the historic centre of Nuremberg. Thanks to the guided tour through the old town, we learned about Nuremberg's Roman and medieval roots, as well as its links to the Third Reich. We visited the most emblematic places: the castle, the market square where the big Christmas market takes place, Albrecht Dürer's house and the "beautiful fountain" among others.
On the second day we visited the Nazi Party Rally Grounds, the Zeppelin Camp and the Documentation Centre. Visiting these huge structures and the Zeppelin Camp gave us an insight into how Nazi party propaganda was organised. The guided tour helped us to understand the causes that made the Nazi party successful and the visit to the Nazi Documentation Centre exhibition gave us a complete picture of the National Socialist dictatorship as well as the history of the party rallies.
The visit to the UNESCO World Heritage City of Reggensburg (Regensburg) and all its architectural heritage helped us understand the importance of this city in medieval times. St. Peter's Cathedral, the Old Town Hall, the old stone bridge, the numerous medieval merchant buildings and the city walls are examples of its importance in the history of the country.
Finally, we visited the memorial of the Flossenburg concentration camp. There we learned that the main reason for its construction there was due to its potential for granite quarrying in construction and we tried to imagine the living conditions of the prisoners in that camp. The guided tour made it clear to us that besides Jews, there were also political prisoners and homosexuals among other prisoners.
