Engaging and Managing Students in Outdoor Science

I really like the sidebar information about "Unconditional Positive Regard" in this resource.

Remember: They don't care how much you know unless they know how much you care!

Working with High School Counselors

These are high school students, not employees. They need guidance and instruction and reminders from you about your expectations and their role when they are assisting on the trail. Remember that they are with the students all the times you are not, and may not be getting much sleep, so be encouraging and positive with them! They get experience, community service credits, and a letter of reference (from me, based on your evaluation notes) for their week of hard work. This BEETLES resource has a 5 minute version of how to help in class - I will be doing the longer version with them at their training, so this should be review. Mainly, we expect them to be engaged, positive role models - but they aren't mind-readers - give them jobs and reinforce their roles to make them, and your class, more successful!
