About Me

A Bit About Me...MsB

I grew up mostly in Florida and was very interested in technical theater. After high school, I went to an arts conservatory program at North Carolina School of the Arts. There, I received my BFA in Technical Theater Production. I went to work at Grinnell College in the theatre department and met my future wife. We moved to Iowa City where we both returned to school. I received my MFA from the University of Iowa in Production Stage Management while she completed nursing school. Afterward, we packed up and headed to the West Coast. I spent time there working for The San Francisco Opera Center, and California Shakespeare Festival. Then, for almost a decade, I worked with and taught undergraduates at The University of California at Berkeley, how to build and rig scenery, prepare show lighting, and stage manage. We had a baby and moved back shortly after to Iowa where I continued to work in theatre, but I chose to take a different direction in my professional life. I entered the University of Iowa College of Education and graduated with endorsements in reading(K-8) and gifted education(K-12).

I started teaching in 2007 at Lucas Elementary and have been an ELP teacher in multiple schools within the district ever since. I am also an ICCSD Equity Ambassador, LGBTQ+ Advocate and Policy Committee member, an Iowa City Education Association (ICEA) Union Building Representative for Twain staff, and an East Central Uniserve Unit(ECUU) union Representative-at-Large and Board member. I am excited to begin a new chapter at ICCSD by initiating ELP's Guided Learning Pathways program for high school.

I have an immense curiosity, desire for Equity, and LOVE to learn. I'm an active Mom, Wife, Teacher (of critical thinking skills, creative problem-solving, and enrichment specialist), Advocate (for human rights and social justice) Reader (Favs: history, non-fiction, historical fiction, diversity themed & unit-related) Technology user and innovation enthusiast. My passions are supporting equity initiatives and promoting access and inclusion of all individuals as their authentic selves. I want to provide a safe place where students can feel comfortable and confident to push themselves to grow and achieve to the best of their abilities. I also enjoy spending time in nature or walking with my wife (who is an ICCSD school nurse), our 2 grown children, and our 2 dogs.
