Day 2 Craft teaching in Finland

Introduction

We started the day at Väinölä school, a primary school in Pori, where we were shown how students work with chromebooks in all subjects, the digital books and materials they used and how technology plays a good part in their process of learning and teaching. The key training of the day was the lecture on craft-teaching in Finland and its workshops.

Craft- teaching in Finland

  • Craft as subject has been in the Finnish curriculum since the 19th century. In the past, they used to have one specific for boys and one for girls. However, in 1990, the content was unified regardless gender.

  • The projects in crafts all undergo a process of creation from brainstorming ideas, design, testing, making, documenting and finally evaluating.

  • Ville and Sanna from Väinöla school carried out two different workshops for the participants: the use of TINKERCAD to design in 3D. We were taught how to design a key-chain and later it was printed on the 3D printer. The second workshop was about Laser Cutter. We also learned to manage this software to design a magnet.
