White Bird by RJ Palacio is based on a Wonder Story. The graphic novel tells the story of Julian, the antagonist in Wonder and his Grandmother. He calls her one day to ask her about her life as a young Jewish teen during World War 2. She tells him about how she escaped the Nazi troops with the help of a young boy who she grew very close to. The boy was taking a great risk by helping Julian's grandmother because it was difficult to help Jewish without fear o being confronted by the Nazi troops. Overall, it is a bitter sweet story that shines light on what is was truly like to live as a Jewish teen during the Holocaust.
Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt is about a girl named Ally. She has dyslexia, which is a disability that hinders one's ability to read and write. Ally is ashamed of her dyslexia and although she is not strong in language arts, Ally is smart enough to keep her literary struggles hidden by creating disruptions in class. She is afraid to ask her teachers for help, often beating herself up for being so dumb. This all changes, however, when Ally meets Mr. Daniels, who notice's Ally creative potential and the bright child she truly is. With his help, Ally grows more confident in herself and learns that she shouldn't let a simple label squash her true ability.
Based on a true incident that occurred in a Californian high school, The Wave by Todd Strasser, is about a group of high schoolers who learn about the Holocaust through a social experiment that goes wrong. Ben Ross is their social studies teacher that enjoys going deeply into each unit of study with his students. One day, the students ask how Hitler got everyone to follow him blindly. This leads Ben Ross to do some research and figure out a way he could teach them about this, but of course this experiment is risky! The novel is a page turner and will keep readers glued till the very last page.
