The children will take their reading folders home everyday and are expected to read and discuss their books frequently during the week. Obviously there are few words in the books at this stage so lots of chatting is required to get the most from the stories, extend vocabulary and generally develop oracy skills. Parents/carers are asked to write encouraging comments in the reading records a couple of times a week. There may also be letter sounds and word lists to practise in their folders.
Please discuss your child’s day with them as they are sometimes invited to take specific items into class to support topic work or be used in sorting activities to develop basic numeracy and literacy skills. Also if they, or you, think you have a relevant book or object which would enhance our topic please send it in.
Each half term the children will be given ‘Big Homework’ based on the current topic. They will choose an activity from a list covering various areas of the curriculum which they can work on with their family’s support.
Although not specified it is hoped that you will regularly play language and maths games with your child to further develop their literacy, numeracy and social skills.
