At times, it may become clear that a child is experiencing difficulties with their learning. When this happens, the first step is always a conversation between parents and teachers to share concerns and observations.
Following this, our ALN Coordinator (ALNCo) will step in to advise and coordinate appropriate support tailored to the child’s needs.
We follow a graduated approach to supporting learners:
This is the first level of support and is available to all pupils. It includes whole-school strategies such as:
Differentiated tasks within the classroom
Additional adult support
In-class or small group interventions
Occasionally, children may be withdrawn from class for focused support sessions
If a child needs more help, we may move to targeted support. This could involve:
One-to-one interventions with a Learning Support Assistant (LSA)
Support from external agencies such as:
Speech and Language Therapy
Occupational Therapy
Educational Psychology Service
Any referrals to external agencies will always be made with parental consent.
If, after a period of targeted support, a child is still not making expected progress, we will invite parents to discuss whether the child may require Additional Learning Provision. This is support that goes beyond what is typically provided for other pupils.
At this stage, we may consider whether the child needs an Individual Development Plan (IDP). For more information on IDPs, please visit SNAP Cymru.
We have developed an ALN Pathway to help explain this process in more detail. You can find it under the ALN section of our website.
