In this module, Year 2 has been super busy with lots and lots of learning! Throughout our Inquiry learning, we have been learning about different religions, traditions and celebrations that happen around the world, especially in the lead up to Christmas. We started our term by researching a range of religions such as Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Judaism and Sihkism. The children found lots of interesting facts about the religions and were able to share these facts with their peers which was great to see. As a whole class, we decided we wanted to learn more about Judaism. We looked at who founded Judaism and how it links to Christianity. We read lots of interesting books about the religion and found out lots of interesting things about how Jewish people pray, where they pray and how they celebrate their religion. Linking with Judaism and celebrations, we looked at Hanukkah and why it is a special celebration for Jewish people. As the children were able to learn lots of things about Judaism, they were able to complete writing outcomes to share their new found knowledge with the rest of the school.
As well as looking at different religions, Year 2 looked at traditions and celebrations around the world, one of them being the World Cup. We looked at the history of the World Cup and who has won so far. We made predictions about this World Cup (unfortunately, lots of us predicted England would win) and created fact files about the teams in our group, which was group B.
To help us develop our knowledge of religion and celebration further, we were lucky enough to visit the local church in our village. We met Reverend Mark and he told us about the Christmas story, how Christmas is celebrated in Hoo and lots of facts about the church. It was a great visit and the children were very excited to go there. This visit helped the children to complete a written recount of the church where the children were able to share their thoughts and feelings about the church.
In maths this term Year 2 has looked at addition and subtraction, as well as shape. The class learned how to add a 2 digit number with a 1 digit number using various methods. They did the same with subtraction. As well as adding and subtracting, Year 2 has been looking at shape. They have enjoyed this practical unit in maths as they have been able to get lots of manipulatives out during learning time. It has been great to see the children making progress in their maths lessons and lots of children have developed their confidence greatly.
This module also saw the children take some practice SATs papers. The children coped very well with these and will continue to complete them every term until they take the 2023 SATs towards the end of this academic year.
To finish the term, the children in Key Stage 1 took part in their Christmas show ‘Nativity Rock!’. They all did an amazing job and really brought the Christmas spirit to Hoo!
Have an amazing Christmas and New Year and we cannot wait to see in you module 3!
