Debbie's Sleigh Bed
Rich & his daughter Deborah built her a sleigh bed in 1997. We designed it together, loosely based on one Debbie had fallen in love with at Costco, but Debbie's bed ended up with stronger lines and more curves. The bed is constructed of solid Alder with Maple plywood inserts for the headboard and footboard panels. I considered this bed my most challenging woodworking project up to that time. For the most part we were very satisfied with the results. One of the most challenging aspects was to build it with no visible hardware (Debbie's request), and yet to be able to disassemble to the level of bedposts, end panels and sideboards. While Debbie and Rich were making her bed, her mother, Gail was making her a beautiful pocket quilt. You can see this quilt in the completed bed photos below.
