Community Engagement (CE) is a core part of the IB Career-related Programme (CP). It supports students to learn through meaningful engagement in, from, and with communities, building ethical awareness, relationship skills, and reflective thinking.
CE is not simply “volunteering hours”. The IB emphasis is on sustained engagement over time, focusing on quality and learning.
Students must show evidence of learning across four outcomes:
Reciprocal and respectful engagement
Systems thinking and awareness
Ethical thinking and action
Reflection and reflexivity
CE runs across the two years of the CP:
CP 1 (Year 11): Terms 1–4
CP 2 (Year 12): Terms 1–2 (may extend into Term 3 if needed)
Students will receive structured support through:
Weekly CE lessons in CP 1 Term 1 and Term 2 (60 minutes per week)
Guided check-ins/workshops across later terms
Ongoing support from the CE Coordinator + Learning Coaches
Students complete three review points across the programme, where they discuss progress and learning with staff.
Students also maintain a Learning Journal, which is their main evidence of growth and learning.
Parents/guardians can support students by:
encouraging consistent journal updates
helping students manage time and communication responsibilities
discussing safety, consent, and respectful representation of others
supporting students to reflect on challenges and growth
