The first few weeks of school we will be learning about the parts of speech and how they work in a sentence. We will then learn how to construct 4th grade sentences.
The Last month was spent on writing a story about an event that happened in your child's life. We learned how to create a storyboard, elements of a story such as exposition, rising action, high point, falling action and resolution. We also learned how to add and edit dialogue, use vigorous verbs, and figurative language to help create a visualization for the reader.
This will be our first official paper. We will start by learning how to write a paragraph. Your child will learn how to write a topic sentence, take notes, organize their information and then use those facts to support the topic sentence. We will then apply that learning by writing a compare and contrast paper. We will compare 2-3 different items such as different versions of famous fairy tales, different animals ie dogs vs. wolves, etc.
For the month of February and into the month of March we will be entering our most time consuming yet fun writing unit. For this unity students will be researching and learning about a person who made a large impact on our society. They will learn how to take notes and summarize their reading, create a display to teach their classmate about their person, and deliver a speech in front of their classmates. This will be quite the undertaking but I know your kids got it!
During our writing lesson the kids worked on identifying the author's opinion. They also learned how to structure a paragraph using a thesis statement and supporting evidence. We will use this structure of writing most of the year.
