The next few months we will investigate the culture and history of Wisconsin's American Indians. We will learn what the definition of culture is and how it is passed from generation to generation. As a class the focus will be on the 5 main tribes and the 11 different bands. We will explore different treaties of the past and how they are affecting the present. We will also learn about tribal sovereignty both past and present.
We will start by reviewing the cardinal directions, hemispheres, continents and oceans. Then zero in on the state of Wisconsin and where we live. The class will learn about the state of Wisconsin, how the state was formed geologically, and different landforms around the state as well as around Hudson.
During this unit we will spend time learning about European Immigration, Angel Island in California, Ellis Island in New York, and why people may choose to leave their country to come to a new one. We will also compare and contrast immigration from the past and immigration today. From there we will engage in a World of Nations project where students will research a country from their heritage and present cultural elements from their country of study.
