During the first weeks of school we will be learning about each other. Learning different types of books we like to read, how we like read, how to monitor our reading when our brain starts to drift. We work extremely hard on finding our Quiet Place and staying engaged in a good book.
During the first weeks of school we will also begin working in small guided reading groups. This will allow us to really get to know each other as readers. I will be working with your kids to push them in their reading skills and show them different genres of books.
Throughout the course of the month we have been dabbling in many different genres such as poetry and historical fiction. The class has been having so much fun listening to the fun poetry works of Douglas Florian and Judith Viorst. The kids learned what a concrete poem was and learned a little bit about poetry structure. We have also been able to read books that set us back in time and learn the characteristics of historical fiction. We learned that even if the book includes some real people or even a real event the story itself is fiction.
