During this Pandemic year we will be refraining the use of community items as well as flexible seating. Everyone will have their own tool kit that they will be responsible for. This is to be kept all school year. Children will also have assigned seats that will be theirs for the duration of the year. Some will have a traditional desk where others will be assigned a table. Morning Meeting activities will be contactless and with social distancing in mind. I will try to plan lessons to be done outdoors as much as possible. Please send students with appropriate weather gear. Masks will be required inside the building and/or when social distancing is tough. Collaboration will be at a minimal this year and done on ChromeBooks. Please send children with at least 2 masks a day if possible. Just in case something happens to the first one. Also please label all materials including masks. Thank you for your understanding at this time! I hope that with your collaboration we will be able to remain in school!
We are a community. We work hard on learning how to respect ourselves as well as each other. We will spend the first 15 minutes of the day participating in a team building activity. Most of our classroom supplies are also community based. I have bins of markers, glue, crayons, pencils, etc that will be shared. Many tasks throughout the day; especially in inquiry students will be expected to work collaboratively. I believe that by running our classroom in this manner it creates a safe environment where ALL students feel that they belong and are accepted. When students feel safe they are more willing to ask and answer questions during learning times, they push themselves more in their learning, and they learn how to work in groups and accept other ways of thinking. We also spend much of our time learning how to be independent learners. We learn about responsibility and time management. All of which allows them to grow personally as well as in their education.
Classrooms should feel welcoming and inviting to kids, allowing them to feel relaxed and comfortable in their school environment. Let's face it school is a home away from home. Flexible seating is a way to have the comfort of home in the classroom. Instead of traditional desks kids will be using tables, pillows, and beanbag chairs. They can sit on the pillows and work at the tables. They will be given the choice to sit or lay on the floor while they work. Many of these options allows the kids to wiggle or move while they are working. These slight movements help engage and motivate them. The research behind flexible seating is astounding. It creates a comfortable environment that kids feel safe and relaxed in. It also empowers choice and decision making. Along with allowing for movement which keeps the kid’s focus and attention for longer periods of time. All of which is linked to higher academic performance.
