As a school we pride ourselves on our caring environment, where students, parents and staff work together with the common goal of enjoying and achieving.
To be successful, it requires hard work, a determination to succeed and a willingness to take academic risks. Every student is guided with their own personal targets and next steps...
Strong communication is key, so we encourage students and parents to keep in touch with teachers, so we can fully support and make any necessary adjustments. This communication then continues beyond the first days, so that we can then best support and challenge every individual to make good progress and achieve their best.
Throughout the week, all students register in their Form Class at 8.30am. This registration time is with their Form Tutor and this provides the opportunity for regular contact and ongoing pastoral support. The Form Tutor who is also a subject teacher at HHIS, serves as a consistent point of contact for students and parents, and will always be available to help.
Registration time across the week provides time for students to ask questions, organise their schedules, take time to reflect, pinpoint future targets, read quietly and also play quizzes and have fun! This time during the mornings is also further enriched by regular assemblies led by students and teachers, where big ideas, events and celebrations are shared and promoted.
We believe this time is key in starting the day in a positive way before lessons begin. When students feel confident and happy, they can achieve their best.
In KS3, all students have the opportunity to have PSHE lessons. PSHE stands for Personal, Social, Health and Economic education. At HHIS, this is a planned, developmental programme of learning through which our students acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives now and in the future. As part of a whole-school approach, PSHE education develops the qualities and attributes students need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. The PSHE education programme makes a significant contribution to students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, their behaviour and safety and the school’s responsibility to promote students’ well-being and support safeguarding.
The overarching aims for PSHE at HHIS is to provide students with:
Accurate and relevant knowledge
Opportunities to turn that knowledge into personal understanding
Opportunities to explore, clarify and if necessary challenge, their own and others’ values, attitudes, beliefs, rights and responsibilities
The skills, language and strategies they need in order to live healthy, safe, fulfilling, responsible and balanced lives
PSHE education at HHIS equips students with the knowledge, understanding, skills and strategies required to live healthy, safe, productive, capable, responsible and balanced lives. It encourages them to be enterprising and supports them in making effective transitions, positive learning and career choices and in achieving economic well-being. A critical component of PSHE education is providing opportunities for children and young people to reflect on and clarify their own values and attitudes and explore the complex and sometimes conflicting range of values and attitudes they encounter now and in the future.
