Homework is set in order to further support, consolidate and extend classroom learning. Teachers will share activities when it is appropriate and beneficial to the current classroom work. Our philosophy is not to set tasks for the sake of making students busy - our teachers share homework that is intentionally designed to support our students, so they feel confident and establish effective routines for future success.
Homework that is set will be a maximum of 45 - 60 minutes per subject. In a given week, this could be upto 5 subjects which include Maths, English, Thai, Spanish or Mandarin, as well as Art & Design.
There may also be times when other subjects share home learning activities. This is when it is purposeful to support the current curriculum - this may include research opportunities, extended projects and revision work to support learning progress.
All homework set by teachers is compulsory and students should complete by the set due date - a schedule for setting and receiving homework is applied by teachers, but there could be times where the days may change. This is always communicated to students.
We recognise that students are more motivated when there is an element of choice in the work set or in the approach they can take to complete. Students should therefore be innovative and use their imagination in how they wish to complete, showcase and submit.
Homework is always discussed in lessons and further details will be posted on Google Classroom. Parents can access this tool and please do contact teachers if you need support.
Students need to remember to click 'submit' or 'turn in' on Google Classroom - otherwise the work is shown as overdue or late.
It is recommended that students try to begin their homework once it is set. This is a good habit and allows questions to be asked if help is needed. Teachers will always support and are available to provide guidance and help. Teachers cannot help the night before or the morning the work is due - students must take resonsibility for their work.
Homework can be completed during lunchtime and after school - students can support each other and gain support from teachers. The library and classrooms can be used. Students often like to sit in the salas too!
In addition to set homework, it is recommended that students read every day. There are a wealth of books to borrow in our library and teachers are very happy to help students in selecting books that are appropriate for their reading level.
When working at home, students should try to organise a study schedule with their families. For example, this could be 5.30-6.30pm on Monday - Thursday, with time also devoted on Sunday for any finishing off, extra reading and review. By developing a routine, it is a great way to build a foundation for future success.
A final tip for home study is to create a 'space' free of distraction. Avoid phones, music, tv and games. Some students may prefer a quiet space in their bedroom or perhaps the chance to work in a common space at home so they can ask any questions to their family as they work.Â
