In Year 7 – 9, the curriculum is broad and balanced and learning opportunities are vast. Academic subjects begin to evolve into the ‘separate subject model’ of secondary school, where each subject becomes its own discipline taught by a specialist teacher.
The subjects enjoyed by our students include English, Maths, Science, Art, Music, Physical Education, Humanities, Languages and Computing. Our subjects follow the English National Curriculum, and we interpret each subject in an international context which helps to make what we study even more relevant.
A big part of the excitement in KS3 is that through central learning themes, students make connections between their subjects and they regularly showcase their learning and inspire others. Every year, these showcase events get bigger and even more imaginative! This is due to the innovation of our students and their willingness to take risks and think BIG!
All subjects are timetabled on a weekly timetable and you can see an example class timetable for KS3 students below. For our students, despite visiting different classrooms, the learning for the subjects is linked through the context of central learning themes. These themes are regularly developed to respond to the changing world and the central ideas tie subjects together and inspire our learners to draw their own meaning from the experiences they gain. Our students are well supported and also regularly challenged to reflect on how they can further develop their approaches to learning. This ensures that every individual is well prepared to take the next step in their learning journey.
The KS3 Curriculum at HHIS is designed to be a buzzing learning environment, where thinking, collaboration and reflection are all crucial to success. Students have the opportunity to develop knowledge, ideas and skills across all their subjects. Students also begin taking on greater responsibility for their own learning.
We want our students to think big, discuss, debate, showcase their innovations and seize the chance to individually grow and contribute to the collective success of everyone - this is for their class and for all the activities and events across our school.
