Abstract:
There is a large body of knowledge surrounding the impact of working and violating labor laws on high schoolers mental health and school performance. There is a gap in the research of data coming directly from high school students and which labor laws are violated most often. The sample consisted of 42 usable responses of participants who are currently enrolled in High School. An online google survey was used to examine the commonality of violations for different laws and different ways employers are keeping track of hours/schedules. The main findings consisted of: 1) The most common violations of Labor Laws in Allegheny County were specific to time; 2) The most commonly violated law was working more than 5 hours without a break; 3) The most common ways employers track hours is through online schedules and clock in systems; 4) Participants were exposed to danger more than they should be without proper training. With more extensive research, we could determine a more concrete understanding of what Labor Laws need to be regulated and enforced more as well as the most effective ways to track hours so violations can be cut down.
